iRobot, the world's largest consumer robot company, announced that it has completed the acquisition of Root Robotics (Root), a commercial educational robot platform, which will help it accelerate its layout in the educational robot market. Root is the creator of the coding robot of the same name. It is a startup company founded by the Wyss Institute of Harvard University. It is a commercial educational robot platform widely used by educators, students and parents, and has a very strong influence in the field of STEM education.
Root Robot, a hexagonal robot for teaching programming, can draw the program codes written by children by inserting a paintbrush in the middle of the palm-sized robot. Through the way of teaching through entertainment and actual practice, people aged 4 to 99 can learn how to program and gradually become programmers with a certain professional level.
Root Robot has many functions. The official website shows that this robot supports 14 functions including drawing, playing music, adsorbing whiteboard, etc. It can be connected to iPad or iPhone via Bluetooth and can be controlled directly by writing program code in a graphical way through the supporting APP. Even people without any experience can use it for programming.
The acquisition of Root means iRobot's entry into the educational robot market.
