A piece of news that "the Iron Curtain has fallen, and 32 Western countries have jointly rejected Huawei" has been widely circulated on Chinese social networks. Multiple self-media accounts and marketing accounts claimed that 32 allies of the United States recently held a meeting on 5G network security in Prague, the capital of the European country of the Czech Republic, and reached a decision that "Huawei will never be satisfied."
However, Huawei's latest response to the matter shows that Huawei not only did not oppose the meeting, but welcomed it.
The article in the picture below is part of the hot articles circulating on Chinese social networks today about 32 Western countries joining forces to block Huawei.
According to these self-media accounts, 32 allies of the United States recently held a meeting on 5G security guidelines in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, and issued a meeting document called the "Prague Proposal", which mentioned the need to establish a security standard that Huawei will never be able to meet, thereby banning Huawei from the West.
Some of the self-media accounts also mentioned that the US government sent a congratulatory message immediately after the release of the "Prague Proposal", saying that the United States strongly supports the security recommendations put forward by the conference for various countries to build 5G networks.
Based on this, some self-media and marketing accounts came to the conclusion that "this is a fatal blow to Huawei and China." Some self-media accounts also sarcastically said, "Chinese media brag every day that Huawei has crushed the US conspiracy, but who knew that the US would kill Huawei with one move."
But what is strange is that for such an event that was described by self-media and marketing accounts as if "the sky is falling", Huawei's response was very "calm" - not only did it not strongly oppose it, but it also expressed "welcome" to the conference to a certain extent.
In a recent statement, Huawei made the following statement:
“Huawei understands the importance that all countries attach to cybersecurity, and we believe that the spirit of cooperation demonstrated at this conference is crucial to ensuring the security of global 5G networks. We are encouraged by the fact that this conference emphasized the importance of research and development, open markets, and competition.
However, we believe that cybersecurity is essentially a technical issue, and technical issues should be solved by technical means. We firmly believe that any future security principles should be based on verifiable facts and technical data, rather than on the territoriality and ideology of the supplier. "
So the question is, why is Huawei so calm in its statement? Is it "putting on a brave face"?
In this regard, Xiang Ligang, a senior expert in the telecommunications industry and chairman of the Information Consumption Alliance, said in an interview with our reporter that this Prague Conference undoubtedly has a certain political color. China is an important 5G power in the world, with Huawei, ZTE, Datang and other world-leading equipment manufacturers. The United States is trying to pressure its allies to jointly boycott Chinese products. This tendency is quite obvious, and the United States does have political considerations in this regard.
However, Xiang Ligang also pointed out that it is impossible to form a unified strategic alliance through a two-day meeting to achieve the goal of boycotting Huawei. He just said, "This meeting did not form a binding agreement. Even if a binding agreement is reached, historical experience shows that it often shows many holes in practice. And judging from the participants of this meeting, except for the host country, other countries are middle-level officials with no decision-making power. The effect of the meeting is still far from what the United States wants to achieve.
Indeed, after reading reports from multiple foreign media outlets and official materials from Prague, the reporter discovered that although 32 US allies did attend the meeting, and it was mentioned that cybersecurity is "not just a technical issue" but also requires consideration of "non-technical factors" with "ideological" overtones, such as the "governance model" of the country where the supplier comes from, and the White House even sent a congratulatory message to the meeting - however, the actual significance of this meeting and the proposal it reached is far less than the current seemingly scary public opinion.
For example, the Prague Conference lasted only two days, and the Associated Press reported that the "Prague Proposal" produced by the conference was not actually legally binding, but was just a suggestion for reference by all countries.
Reuters' report also showed that many participating countries were not even prepared to sign any conference materials.
In other words, this meeting and its proposals are not a foregone conclusion, and Huawei still has room to maneuver. This is also one of the reasons why Huawei can respond calmly.
"America's allies also have brains," Jiang Junmu, a well-known communications media figure and deputy editor-in-chief of C114 China Communications Network, told reporters that although the United States continues to exert pressure, Huawei has actually obtained all the "markets it deserves."
He further introduced that, for example, the governments of major European countries such as the United Kingdom and Germany have already stated that they will not exclude Huawei, and South Korea, which is also attending the conference in Prague, has already cooperated with Huawei; as for markets such as Australia, which have not allowed Huawei to enter, there is no big problem.
In addition, Jiang Junmu also introduced that Huawei has basically won all the Gulf countries in the Middle East. He said that according to the latest news from the 2019 Huawei Global Analyst Conference, as of the end of March, Huawei has signed 40 5G commercial contracts with leading global operators, 10 of which are from the Middle East, including major Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
"So I think Huawei will not have any major problems dealing with pressure from the United States," said Jiang Junmu.
Finally, Jiang Junmu believes that the fact that the United States paid so much attention to the Prague Conference and sent a congratulatory message at the first time was more of a "public opinion war", that is, to create a public opinion momentum that Huawei has been "abandoned" - of course, the fact is far from this.
