Microsemi Corporation, a leading provider of semiconductor technology solutions differentiated by power, security, reliability and performance, announced the availability of its Secure Production Programming Solution (SPPS) for field programmable logic devices (FPGAs). This new solution securely generates and injects cryptographic keys and configuration bitstreams into Microsemi FPGA devices, thereby preventing cloning, reverse engineering, malware insertion, leakage of sensitive intellectual property (IP) (such as trade secrets or classified data), over-manufacturing and other security threats.

Microsemi's SPPS approach includes the use of "customer" and "manufacturer" hardware security modules (HSMs), combined with Microsemi's firmware and the latest SPPS Job Manager software, and advanced security protocols in every Microsemi SmartFusion™2 system-on-chip (SoC) FPGA and IGLOO™2 FPGA device. In this way, SPPS allows customers to automatically prevent major security threats currently posed by external attackers or competitors, contract manufacturers and their employees, or other insiders. SPPS is an ideal solution for FPGA-based systems that may be at risk of over-manufacturing in a variety of applications in the communications, defense, industrial and automotive market sectors.

"Our proven SPPS process enables end-to-end security and control throughout the manufacturing process, allowing customers to safely use lower-cost manufacturing resources, such as offshore contract manufacturers, while reducing security risks," said Bruce Weyer, vice president and business unit manager at Microsemi. "SPPS extends our FPGA device security leadership and has been successfully used by Tier 1 commercial and defense companies."

Protecting IP and Revenue

According to the US Department of Commerce, IP threats cost US businesses more than $250 billion and approximately 750,000 jobs each year. In the US, more than 55 million jobs are supported by IP-intensive industries.

"Microsemi's new SPPS delivers industry-leading capabilities in the programmable logic market, potentially saving millions of dollars in lost revenue and brand theft," said Shakeel Peera, senior director of marketing for Microsemi's SoC products. "With the only DPA-resistant FPGA design certification from an independent third-party lab, this product completes the supply chain assurance from wafer test to customer deployed systems, so our customers can trust that the systems they deploy are authentic, and only the systems they want deployed are deployed."

Key safety features of SPPS include:

Prevent overproduction and cloning
Provide secure audit trail of programmed devices and programmed content
Provide counterfeit parts detection
Security key management (generation/storage/use)
 Secure field upgrade file generation

About Microsemi's Secure Manufacturing Programming Solutions

Microsemi's Secure Production Programming Solution (SPPS) builds on its existing internal HSM production infrastructure, using certified HSMs to deliver factory keys and certificates during wafer test and package test. Microsemi's solution enables customers to securely program unique key materials and designs into Microsemi's award-winning SmartFusion2 SoC FPGAs and IGLOO2 FPGAs, even in untrusted locations around the world. HSM effectively eliminates vulnerabilities caused by insiders, especially those at production locations, while maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive data and preventing product tampering, such as the implantation of Trojan horses.

Microsemi's SPPS Job Manager software generates a job file containing cryptographic security parameters, a limited number of authorized production devices, and an FPGA bitstream, enabling users to monitor all aspects of FPGA production jobs, including specifying required key management options, and allowing them to fully control the number of production systems. This file can only be read by the target manufacturing HSM. SPPS can also regenerate configuration encryption files for FPGA devices that users have previously encrypted, such as devices that have been deployed in field systems.

All security-sensitive operations, including device authentication (for supply chain assurance), key generation, bitstream encryption, production system authorization and counting, and audit log signing, are performed within the hardware security boundaries of the FIPS140-2 Level 3 certified Thales HSM, rather than on vulnerable open Windows or Linux computer workstations. This provides the highest level of security in the FPGA industry for detecting counterfeit devices, protecting design IP, and preventing over-manufacturing.

Product Availability

SPPS is available now from Microsemi. Microsemi is an official distributor of Thales hardware security modules, which are customer-programmed to execute security protocols designed into Microsemi FPGAs.
