The long-awaited 4680 lithium-ion battery in the electric vehicle industry is finally going into mass production! This carefully crafted battery from Panasonic not only improves the range, power, and charging efficiency of electric vehicles, but also reduces costs. It seems that electric car owners will soon be able to enjoy longer mileage, faster acceleration, and more affordable prices.
Traditional electric vehicle battery packs mostly use 2170 battery, which is 21 mm in diameter and 70 mm in length. The 4680 is the "fat" version of this number, with a diameter of 46 mm and a length of 80 mm. It sounds like it has become fatter and longer, but this is not just an increase in volume, but such a design can increase the energy density by five times!
What does this mean? Although it will not directly increase the range of electric vehicles by 500%, since the battery itself requires less auxiliary materials, the overall system weight will be lighter and smaller, which will help improve energy efficiency.
According to the analysis of battery experts, this 4680 battery can also handle higher instantaneous power, which means that electric vehicles will be able to achieve stronger peak output and charge faster. Not only that, this design will also perform better in heat dissipation, making energy efficiency higher and maintaining high power output for a long time. Most importantly, the price will be cheaper! This is undoubtedly a great blessing for consumers who are still waiting to see whether to buy electric vehicles.
Although Panasonic has not yet announced the specific specifications of the 4680 battery, they have specially renovated an entire factory in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan for this purpose. This factory, which covers an area of more than 60,000 square meters, will be fully invested in the production of 4680. It is expected that by March next year, the factory will have 400 employees operating at full capacity.
In any case, any innovation that can further improve the weight, volume, safety, performance and cost of batteries based on existing lithium-ion technology will undoubtedly be a great boon to the electric vehicle industry. We can only hope that electric vehicles will become more powerful and more affordable in the future.
