Tongmingliang Optoelectronics Technology joins ams and OSRAM to combine the open system protocol ecosystem of intelligent RGB to promote the intelligentization of automotive ambient lighting

  • ams OSRAM has released the Open System Protocol (OSP) in 2023, and its application in automotive cabin lighting has attracted widespread attention from many integrated circuit (IC) and LED manufacturers;

  • Tongmingliang Optoelectronics will adopt OSP in its next generation of smart RGB LEDs, which will provide critical independent certification for future-oriented communication technologies;

  • The Open Systems Protocol is an open, license-free technology for connecting RGB LEDs, sensors and microcontrollers from different manufacturers.

Shanghai, China, April 17, 2024 - amsram (SIX Swiss Exchange: AMS), a leading global supplier of optical solutions, and TM Optoelectronics, a leading automotive LED solutions provider in Malaysia, today jointly announced that they have reached a cooperation agreement to integrate amsram's Open System Protocol (OSP) into TM Optoelectronics' next-generation smart RGB LED products designed for automotive interior ambient lighting . This strategic move aims to jointly improve the technical compatibility and promote innovation in the automotive lighting field by inviting more partners to participate.

OSP, launched by ams and OSRAM in 2023, is an open, unlicensed communication technology for connecting RGB LEDs, sensors and microcontrollers produced by different manufacturers. Tongmingliang Optoelectronics Technology announced that it will soon launch products integrating OSP, further establishing the protocol as a universal way to connect smart LEDs in the car. This key move enhances the supply chain resilience of automakers, allowing them to freely change suppliers and sellers when sourcing ambient lighting LEDs and related components without having to reconfigure system communications.

New possibilities for ambient lighting: atmosphere, warning, information

As the interior of a car gradually evolves into the "third living space" of people's lives, the automotive atmosphere lighting system is being given a new mission. Using intelligent technology, dynamic atmosphere lighting can achieve animation effects, color changes, and brightness adjustment, and is used to create atmosphere, convey information, issue warnings, and other functions, and effectively enhance the recognition of car brands. To achieve these functions, advanced intelligent RGB LED technology and a communication protocol that is compatible with the standard serial interface of various microcontrollers and can transmit high-frequency control signals are required.

While releasing the OSP infrastructure, ams OSRAM also launched the compatible smart RGB LED OSIRE® E3731i, demonstrating that OSP fully meets the above functional requirements. With the addition of Tongmingliang Optoelectronics Technology to the OSP ecosystem, automakers are provided with another OSP-compatible LED option. This exciting progress promotes the innovation and flexibility of ambient lighting solutions.

OSP Example: OSIRE® E3731i

As the industry's first OSP-compatible smart RGB LED, the OSIRE® E3731i has an internal ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) that can drive three RGB emitters. It provides measurement data to automatically calibrate the color, thereby ensuring extremely high LED color uniformity. This is especially important for long LED light strips in the car cabin. The OSIRE® E3731i supports daisy chain topology, and each control chain only requires two communication lines and two power lines to connect up to 1,000 LED lights in series, which not only simplifies the installation process, but also helps to achieve single-layer PCB design.

OSIRE® E3731i has obtained AEC-Q102 certification and meets automotive electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards, setting a new benchmark for smart RGB LEDs in the automotive industry.

Tongmingliang Optoelectronics Technology is very honored to join the OSP ecosystem to enrich its existing seddLED product line and meet diverse customer needs. seddLED + A3H will become the first OSP-compatible smart RGB LED on the market. The company aims to develop a usable prototype sample in the third quarter of fiscal year 2024.

Looking to the future together: Application of OSP

ams OSRAM and Tongmingliang Optoelectronics Technology jointly emphasized the importance of OSP as the foundation of future smart RGB LED architecture. Given the industry's demand for diversified sourcing, the OSP protocol simplifies and reduces the cost of LED serial communication, allowing automakers to freely choose different suppliers without having to redesign the architecture.

While maintaining their respective product features, ams OSRAM and Tongmingliang Optoelectronics Technology are committed to improving the compatibility of future LED and sensor products. Although the need to formulate formal standards for the automotive lighting industry is not urgent, it is still an issue worthy of discussion in the industry. The OSP protocol adheres to the principle of openness and is free of licensing fees, encouraging more partners to join and jointly promote innovation and compatibility in the field of automotive lighting.
