According to reports, an internal memo shows that Tesla plans to increase production at its Shanghai factory in the next two months to meet demand triggered by significant price cuts on its best-selling models.
According to the memo, at least in February and March this year, Tesla's Shanghai factory plans to produce an average of nearly 20,000 vehicles per week, close to the level of September last year. In September last year, the Shanghai factory produced 82,088 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.
Tesla has not commented yet.
In order to stimulate electric vehicle sales, Tesla lowered the prices of Model 3 and Model Y in the Chinese market by 6% and 13.5% respectively early last month (January 6). Data shows that from January 9 to 15, the average daily sales of Tesla electric vehicles in the Chinese market reached 12,654 units, a year-on-year increase of 76%.
As of January 29, Tesla's average daily retail sales in China increased by 36% compared with the same period last year, reaching 25,686 vehicles.
During an earnings call last week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said orders roughly doubled in January following global price cuts. Musk also predicts that delivery volume in 2023 may reach 2 million vehicles.
