On January 4, local time, Mobileye, an autonomous driving subsidiary of Intel, announced that it has received a licensing proposal from TÜV SÜD, an independent third-party testing, certification, auditing and consulting service provider in Germany, and will be able to operate on German roads. Self-driving cars.

Mobileye said the license paves the way for Mobileye to expand its pilot in Germany, allowing Mobileye to run NIO ES8 electric vehicles equipped with the Mobileye Drive autonomous driving system and equipped with safety guards on all roads in Germany.

According to reports, Mobileye has chosen to work with Weilai ES8 and multiple other partners in 2021 to provide mobility as a service (MaaS) in Munich, Darmstadt and other parts of Europe. These NIO ES8s are equipped with Mobileye's self-driving hardware and software and are planned to be used as self-driving taxis and shuttles in Germany, integrating into the local public transportation system.

The European Union and Germany will release relevant regulations in 2022 to ensure the safety of autonomous vehicle testing and deployment. Mobileye said that it will gradually accelerate mobility-as-a-service pilot projects in Germany in 2023, subject to compliance with relevant regulations.

It is understood that until all necessary approvals and permits are obtained for fully autonomous driving, the cars will be operated with a safety officer.

The NIO ES8 tested was modified with a series of sensors and equipped with Mobileye's autonomous driving system Mobileye Drive, which has a defined operational design range (ODD).

Mobileye pointed out that this self-driving car has redundant sensing capabilities through 13 cameras and an independent auxiliary perception system (including 6 surround radars, 3 long-range and 6 short-range surround lidars).
