When it comes to a new car, consumers used to care more about the three major parts consisting of engine, gearbox and chassis, but now it is very different. There are almost no "turbo black", "dual clutch black", "turbo black", "dual clutch black", etc. Figures of the "torsion beam black" people. In Yi Ge’s view, this is not because all three major products have advanced to the point where they can’t find any faults, but that consumers have a new focus – intelligence.
You have to admit that whether it is an electric vehicle or a fuel vehicle, except for mini-cars such as Hongguang MINI EV, almost every car uses intelligence as a selling point, including smart driving and smart cockpit. It is worth mentioning that under the constraints of relevant regulations, domestic smart driving products are all at the L2 level. That is to say, from a certain level, these products are at the same level. Therefore, more car companies are willing to introduce smart driving products to the L2 level. The focus of publicity is on the unlimited smart cockpit field.
But what is unexpected is that the NIO ES8 is priced at more than 400,000 yuan, the Xpeng G9 is priced at more than 300,000 yuan , and the Nezha U-Ⅱ is priced at more than 100,000 yuan . , they have all been labeled as "cockpit ceiling" on the Internet, and the standard for such evaluation actually comes from a chip-Qualcomm 8155.
Is Qualcomm 8155 so awesome?
Why is Qualcomm 8155 so popular?
Before figuring out whether Qualcomm 8155 is so effective, we must first figure out what Qualcomm 8155 is.
It should be noted that, except for electric heaters and electromagnetic devices, almost all other electronic devices require chips to work. Depending on the function, some chips are simple and some are complex. Qualcomm 8155 is in the field of smart cockpits. The car-grade chip is equivalent to the CPU on a PC device.
Qualcomm 8155 was released in 2019. It is the successor of Qualcomm’s previous generation cockpit chip Qualcomm 820A. It uses a 7nm process and provides 8 cores. At the time, Qualcomm 8155 was indeed considered a top-notch chip.
According to common sense, the development of electronic equipment is too rapid, and there is no reason for Qualcomm 8155 to remain prosperous. It can be seen that today, a few years later, the mobile phone chips Qualcomm 855 and 865, which were in the same period as Qualcomm 8155, have long lost their glory. Flagship phones with these chips have even been reduced to thousand-yuan phones. But what is unexpected is that to this day, Qualcomm 8155 is still highly sought after by car companies and users.
In Yi Ge's view, there are two reasons why Qualcomm 8155 chips can continue to be favored. First, the chips for cars and computers are not as "volumey" as those for mobile phones and PCs. The current scale is not enough for all chip companies to go all out, so the initiative Still in the hands of Qualcomm: More importantly, in terms of computing power and video processing of the product itself, the current Qualcomm 8155 chip is still able to beat the competition.
What is certain is that before other competitors launch more powerful products, Qualcomm's 8155 chip, which is no longer young, will continue to be strong. For car companies, the fear of being dominated by Qualcomm now is like the fear of being dominated by Aisin.
What does strong chip performance mean?
Although the Qualcomm 8155 chip is powerful, it is just a smart cockpit chip. Does a strong smart cockpit chip mean a strong smart cockpit? As mentioned just now, the role of the smart cockpit chip in the smart cockpit is the same as that of the CPU in the PC. So we can think back. Does a strong CPU mean a strong PC?
The answer is obviously no.
In a PC device, the motherboard determines the scalability; the memory determines the running speed; the external memory determines the storage speed; the heat dissipation determines the high temperature resistance; the screen determines the display effect; the system determines the computing logic... Although the CPU is the core of a PC device, But regardless of other configurations, no matter how good the CPU is, it won't be able to perform as well.
Similarly, for a car's smart cockpit, if it only uses the Qualcomm 8155 chip and does not pay attention to other configurations, it is obviously unreasonable to label it as a "cockpit ceiling".
In other words, relying solely on a chip that costs only more than a hundred yuan in RMB cannot change your destiny.
It should be noted that from an experience perspective, whether a car’s smart cockpit is excellent or not, the central control system is the key, and in an excellent central control system, excellent screen quality, system functions, and UI design All are essential. In addition, if the smart cockpit also supports other functions, then the advancement of other hardware needs to be considered, such as cameras, HUD projection, etc. To be sure, to measure whether a smart cockpit is excellent or not, the computing power of the chip is important, but the importance of other hardware cannot be ignored.
Previously, a domestically produced model was equipped with another brand's flagship chip and was destined to serve as the most cost-effective high-end smart car. The car also received widespread praise on the Internet. However, when Brother Yi actually sat in this car, he immediately lost all good feelings because the car's central control screen failed in both dimensions of resolution and color gamut.
In Yi Ge’s opinion, the equipped Qualcomm 8155 chip can only mean that the processing speed of its cockpit chip is faster, nothing more, and it cannot even be equated with the faster response of the car. In the entire smart cockpit, this only means faster processing speed. A very small part. Therefore, users do not need to overly deify products equipped with Qualcomm 8155 chip.
