According to foreign media reports, General Motors has obtained a patent for a display system with selective light-shielding capabilities. The patent application was filed on March 2, 2021. On October 11, 2022, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced the patent, and the assigned serial number is US 11,467,401 B2.

The patent describes a display or light-shielding screen that includes a liquid crystal array layer containing liquid crystal pixels, and a transparent LED layer containing LED pixels. There are also controllers in the system that can be connected to the liquid crystal layer and the transparent LED layer. The controller can selectively activate lighting in specific areas of LED pixels and selectively dim certain areas of liquid crystal pixels to correspond to the selected LED pixels.
