On July 22, according to domestic media reports, at the World Power Battery Conference, Wu Kai, chief scientist of CATL, said that the M3P battery developed by the company has been mass-produced and will be launched on the market and used in new electric vehicles as early as next year. The energy density of this battery is higher than that of lithium iron phosphate, but the cost is lower than that of ternary lithium, which will help promote the price reduction of electric vehicles.
It is understood that CATL announced in February this year that it plans to launch a new product, the M3P battery, which is a battery product developed based on a new material system and is somewhat different from lithium iron phosphate. However, according to relevant professionals, this should be an improved variety of lithium iron phosphate, in which other metal elements are added to increase the original capacity and performance limits of the battery.
At this stage, the performance of lithium iron phosphate has been squeezed to the limit, and the energy density has reached the theoretical maximum level. Even if the density continues to be compacted, it is difficult to make a breakthrough. CATL M3P should be improved on this basis, adding other chemical elements to the positive electrode of the traditional lithium iron phosphate battery to improve the low-temperature performance and voltage platform of the battery. The energy density should be significantly improved, and it is expected to reach more than 200Wh/kg. The cost is still much cheaper than ternary lithium.
