EMCORE Corporation, a leading supplier of advanced mixed-signal products, announced the launch of its new Model 1995 1550 nm high-power continuous wavelength (CW) source distributed feedback (DFB) laser for use in Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and autonomous vehicle applications.

The 1995 laser uses a cooled TOSA (Transmission Optical Sub Assembly) form factor and a 6+1 pin sealed TO56 package, and can be used as a continuous wavelength (CW) coherent light source laser for LiDAR technology. In addition, the laser also uses high isolation and efficient coupling schemes to provide 15dBm CW optical power and excellent spectral coherence. In addition, it also expands EMCORE's product offering for LiDAR, including the 1790 1550 nm high-power CW source laser for LiDAR in EMCORE's classic 14-pin butterfly package.

EMCORE provides a compact, robust solution for Model 1995 lasers to enable frequency modulated continuous wavelength (FMCW) sensing, which is critical for autonomous vehicles and a variety of other optical sensing applications. The key advantage of EMCORE’s LiDAR laser technology for autonomous driving is the narrow linewidth achieved through a monolithic design that is highly immune to mode or optical frequency hopping, which is typically common in external cavity designs. Mode or optical frequency hopping can cause erroneous readings in FMCW LiDAR, and EMCORE’s laser technology maintains optical frequency stability over temperature, thereby suppressing erroneous readings.

Gyo Shinozaki, Vice President and General Manager of Broadband at EMCORE, said: “In addition to the 1995 and 1790 models, EMCORE also offers custom chip-level development and component packaging options, enabling customers to tailor their LiDAR technology to their specific requirements.”
