On December 21, Volkswagen automotive software and technology company CARIAD and geolocation technology expert TomTom announced a partnership to jointly develop advanced navigation products for the Volkswagen Group. TomTom has many years of expertise in hybrid navigation and industry-leading traffic services, while CARIAD has outstanding strengths in high-quality user experience and vehicle integration. This innovative product will be developed by combining the above advantages of both parties. This agreement is a continuation of TomTom's successful cooperation with the Volkswagen Group, and its services cover all markets around the world except China. For many years, TomTom has been a trusted traffic service partner of the Volkswagen Group.

CARIAD, a developer of Volkswagen's hardware and software platforms, will develop navigation UI/UX as well as map visualization to create a unique navigation experience for customers of Volkswagen Group brands. CARIAD aims to tightly integrate navigation into Volkswagen vehicle platforms, enabling seamless operation between infotainment systems and state-of-the-art driver assistance systems. By leveraging Volkswagen Group's global fleet and using its data, CARIAD will continuously improve the quality and coverage of navigation services. By 2030, CARIAD plans to connect more than 40 million vehicles worldwide to Volkswagen Group's automotive cloud.
TomTom has developed a unique navigation solution that integrates perfectly into the Volkswagen Group's digital cockpit, offering frequent OTA updates. TomTom's advanced cloud-native navigation solution uses ultra-fast up-to-date routes and real-time traffic information to provide optimal navigation and accurate estimated arrival times. When no data connection is available, the solution switches to its onboard software, making it available in all situations.
Francisco Moreno, Head of Navigation at CARIAD, said: “By partnering with TomTom, we will further transform the Volkswagen autonomous vehicle experience, seamlessly integrating into the driver’s digital life. With the support and expertise of TomTom, combined with the Volkswagen Group’s connected fleet, we will bring many exciting innovations to the market, contributing to a safer, more time-saving and more intuitive driving experience.”
The two companies are also developing other innovative solutions. The first models to demonstrate next-generation navigation technology will be electric models and will be on the road in 2023. These models will have electric vehicle range and route accuracy, far higher than other current vehicles. In addition, the two companies are also developing other groundbreaking features, including lane-level navigation and lane-related traffic as well as a more advanced and personalized electric vehicle experience.
Antoine Saucier, Managing Director of TomTom Automotive, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with CARIAD, a leader in the automotive industry, and to further deepen our collaboration with Volkswagen Group. TomTom’s advanced navigation solutions will power the next generation of digital cockpits across Volkswagen Group, both in production cars and premium lines, and are expected to enable even greater integration and continued innovation in the coming years.”
