On October 21, location data and technology platform HERE Technologies announced the launch of the intelligent speed assistance map HERE ISA Map, which provides vehicle systems and drivers with instant and accurate road speed limit information. The map is designed for automakers to meet the latest European Union (EU) Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) system requirements to achieve road safety and reduce CO2 emissions.

In-car ISA systems help drivers understand and comply with legal speed limits on a given road. Maps with correct speed limit information are essential to the driving experience. HERE ISA maps provide speed limit information at all times, regardless of the environment, especially for camera-only in-car ISA solutions. Special cases include:
Speed limits are not posted, including default national speed limits on motorways, city roads and metropolitan areas, and variations in border speed limit rules based on national requirements.
Conditional speed limits based on time of day and weather conditions.
The speed limit is not seen due to obstruction by foliage growth, lack of infrastructure maintenance, or other reasons.
Implicitly posted speed limits are speed limit changes based on default rules, such as before a built-up area or on a motorway entrance.
The HERE ISA Map will include the following information:
Clear speed limits on road signs, and implicit speed limits on road signs without numerical values.
Speed limits defined by road rules and regulations, including national or regional speed limits and conditional speed limits. These speed limits are usually unsigned and therefore cannot be detected by on-board cameras.
Required road topology with selected attributes that minimizes data points for small vehicles while still enabling electronic horizon providers to power ISA functionality.
Several global automakers have already adopted the HERE ISA Map to achieve their 2022 and 2024 targets.
“We are proud to provide the automotive industry with advanced location data and services to improve road safety for all road users,” said Sheila Nedelcu, Senior Director of Automotive Product Management at HERE Technologies. “The HERE ISA Map is focused on ensuring driver safety, providing drivers with real-time and accurate speed limit information, including conditional restrictions and hidden signs. The HERE ISA Map can be easily integrated into all ISA solutions and helps automakers comply with the latest mandatory EU ISA regulations.”
HERE ISA Map is available as a standalone map for simpler ISA solutions and vehicle segments. In addition to the same set of map attributes, HERE ADAS Map (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) contains additional geospatial content for lane keeping and adaptive cruise control to provide a more advanced set of driver assistance features. Available distribution formats include RDF for customers to compile into their own proprietary format, NDS.Classic for customers following the in-vehicle mapping approach, and NDS.Live map services for highly connected vehicles.
