Samsung develops all-solid-state battery: energy density 900Wh/L, volume halved compared to lithium-ion battery

Scientists and large companies have long been committed to seeking breakthroughs in battery technology. In the latest issue of the top journal Nature Energy, Samsung Advanced Research Institute and Samsung Japan Research Institute jointly published the latest progress of solid-state batteries. This high-performance and long-lasting all-solid-state battery has a higher energy density than lithium-ion batteries, which makes it possible to have a larger capacity and is safer.

Previously, all-solid-state batteries generally used lithium metal as anodes, but over time, it is easy to cause a branching effect, affecting life and safety. This time, Samsung researchers have discovered a silver-carbon (Ag-C) nanocomposite anode layer, which also achieves greater capacity, cycle life and safety.

It is reported that the silver-carbon compound layer is only 5 microns thick, but it can increase the battery energy density to 900Wh/L. The volume of the prototype battery is 50% smaller than that of a traditional lithium-ion battery of the same capacity.

Samsung expects its all-solid-state batteries to be used first in the electric vehicle field. The prototype product can achieve a range of 800 kilometers on a single charge and can be cycled up to 1,000 times.
