Recently, parts manufacturer Magna announced that it is working with three partners, including the U.S. Department of Energy, to develop drive motors for the next generation of pure electric vehicles. It is understood that the research and development goal of the new drive motor is to increase the power density to 8 times that of the current common electric motors, while reducing the cost by 50%.
In addition, the research and development scope of the project includes the development and use of innovative materials, new cooling technology and winding technology, as well as the optimization of motor control technology and other related technologies. According to officials, the new drive motor technology will be launched in 2021.
