As an important part of this safety industry conference, the "3rd Traffic Safety Industry Summit" was also held at the same time. This conference was guided by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Emergency Management, and the People's Government of Guangdong Province, and co-organized by Cheyun.com and Electric Power, with the theme of "Safe Travel, Smart Future". The conference was composed of nearly 50 professional guests from government agencies, vehicle manufacturers, parts suppliers, scientific research institutions, and start-up companies, covering various industries such as automobiles, transportation, electronics, and communications. The conference discussed the most forward-looking and feasible safe travel models and ecosystems, and promoted cross-border integration and coordinated development.

It comprehensively discussed the safety issues in all aspects of the automotive industry, from the overall safety of the automotive industry to the safety of power batteries, and then to the safety of new technologies and smart transportation. Each meeting directly addressed the most focused issues in a specific field, and each expert had sharp opinions and a lot of valuable information.

Discussion 1: Are electric cars safer than fuel cars?

In the special session on new energy vehicle safety, four experts focused on the controversial topic of whether electric vehicles are safer than fuel vehicles. I believe that as electric vehicles gradually replace fuel vehicles, the answer to this question will gradually become clear. However, at present, electric vehicles are still widely misunderstood among consumers, and professional and authoritative voices are the most powerful weapon to resolve these misunderstandings.

Zou Guangcai, head of the National Innovation Center's Strategy and Resource Integration Group: According to authoritative statistics, the probability of electric vehicles catching fire is not necessarily higher than that of traditional fuel vehicles. It is just that electric vehicles are currently the focus of attention and are a new thing. Therefore, from the perspective of the public, the media often report electric vehicle fires as news, giving people the impression that electric vehicle fires are very common. In addition, electric vehicle fires have a greater impact on personal safety, so they cause psychological shock to everyone, so we hope that consumers will look at it objectively.

From the perspective of technology development, solid-state batteries are still in the laboratory stage, and the focus is still on the materials in the solid electrolyte, including how to make the ratio more reasonable and how to adapt to industrial applications, which are still under study. New material technology is a key breakthrough point in the strategic plan of strengthening China's science and technology, and solid-state batteries are also within this scope.

In the future, pure electric vehicles will basically replace gasoline vehicles, while fuel cell vehicles may replace diesel commercial vehicles. These are two coexisting technical routes.

Lei Hongjun, chief engineer of the Institute of New Energy Intelligent Connected Vehicles at Wuhan University of Science and Technology: Electric vehicles are safer than fuel vehicles because gasoline can be burned, but power batteries themselves cannot be burned. It’s just that fuel vehicles have been perfected in design for nearly a hundred years, while electric vehicles still have product quality issues.

Solid-state batteries can be commercialized in three years at the earliest and five years at the latest, but it is still uncertain whether they can be applied on a large scale. Fuel cells will definitely become popular, because there will be too much electricity in the future, and a lot of it will be wasted. We need to convert electricity into hydrogen for reuse, which is a national strategy.

Lan Zhibo, Chief Technology Officer of Aulton New Energy: When battery technology and electric vehicles are not compatible, how can electric vehicles meet the needs of use, eliminate safety risks, and make electric vehicles truly function like fuel vehicles. Therefore, how to reduce the pressure on batteries from the perspective of use is a proposition worth studying. Battery swapping has successfully given us hope.

Li Fancong, General Manager of Rococo Artificial Intelligence Business Group: I think that with the development of the entire automotive industry, cars in the IOT era will be much better than those in the fuel era. However, new energy vehicles and smart cars are still in an exploratory stage, and the effectiveness of AI + big data has not been fully brought into play. At this stage, AI can only be used for assisted driving, including L3, which has already faced challenges, and it will still take some time to reach L4. Therefore, in the field of automotive big data security, I think it will take at least 3 to 5 years to accumulate data.

Discussion 2: Does the battery pack “trip up” the electric car?

As we all know, the current deep-water area of electric vehicle safety is mainly concentrated on battery safety. So, if the safety of power batteries cannot be guaranteed, will the development of electric vehicles be affected?

Chen Quanshi, professor of the School of Vehicle and Transportation Engineering at Tsinghua University and honorary director of the Electric Vehicle Branch of the China Society of Automotive Engineers, said: There are two main reasons for the safety hazards of electric vehicles: First, companies are not down-to-earth in making products, at least not as rigorous and down-to-earth as Nissan did when it came to the Lingfeng. Second, under the temptation of high subsidies, these companies rushed into the battle without fully mastering high-energy-density batteries.

Dai Kangwei, deputy director of BAIC New Energy Engineering Research Institute: With the development of the new energy industry in the past nine years, our domestic battery factories are also progressing very rapidly. Everyone's control over quality, rigorous design, and performance improvement are all developing rapidly. While we see the problems, I think we should still see its progress and growth.

Deng Xiaoguang, deputy director of the Engineering Research Institute of Hezhong Corporation: The 811 battery is definitely not a monster. I think it is a good horse. What we need to do is to equip this good horse with a good saddle.

Gu Guohong, COO of Tafel Battery: I think if you don’t drive a pure electric car, you will always have this or that problem. But after driving it, you will fall in love with it deeply. Why? Because it has almost no maintenance costs, almost no money.

Yang Jiwei, General Manager of Chuangwei New Energy Vehicle Products Division: Since electric vehicles are in the early stages of development, safety incidents are unavoidable and they must go through this stage. However, within ten years from now, safety issues caused by thermal runaway of batteries, whether it is battery cells, modules, or PACKs, may no longer exist.
