According to Forbes, in the face of the development trend of new energy vehicle (electric vehicle) technology and the fierce market competition of current autonomous driving technology, General Motors has strengthened its research and development efforts on the new generation of vehicle platforms, hoping to take the initiative in market competition. Recently, General Motors released the latest "zero emission" digital vehicle platform, which will become the research and development basis of General Motors' next generation of vehicles in the future.

GM said that the platform can provide strong support for the data system of the entire vehicle, and can process up to 4.5 terabytes of data per hour, providing powerful data processing capabilities for the Internet of Vehicles, cloud technology and in-vehicle intelligent systems, which is five times the computing power of GM's current platform. In terms of communication technology for the Internet of Vehicles, the platform relies on the latest communication technology protocols to speed up the communication speed inside and outside the car, with Ethernet speeds of up to 100Mb, 1Gpb and 10Gbp, and can enhance the network security of the Internet of Vehicles through big data chains.

In terms of supporting GM's autonomous driving system, the platform can enhance the capabilities of the Super Cruise autonomous driving assistance system. GM has already equipped the 2019 model and 2018 model Cadillac CT6 produced after September 6, 2017 with the Super Cruise autonomous driving assistance system. It is predicted that after the technical upgrade of the platform, this autonomous driving assistance system will be able to play a greater role and achieve greater results.

GM has high hopes for this new digital car platform. GM CEO Mary Barra said that "zero accidents, zero emissions, and zero congestion" is one of GM's future visions, and GM will achieve this vision with its partners by developing electric and self-driving cars. GM President Mark Reuss also believes that the new digital platform is a key step in achieving the vision of "zero accidents, zero emissions, and zero congestion."

It is reported that GM plans to put this new platform into the production of the 2020 Cadillac CT5 sedan, which will be launched later this year, and then gradually expand it to other product lines. GM will invest more research and development funds to support this. Previously, GM’s plan showed that GM will focus on investing in "batteries, electric vehicles and self-driving cars", and GM will also use "house money" for investment, which will come from the profits of higher-priced internal combustion engine pickups and SUVs.

In this regard, market analysts said that GM's new digital platform and the development of its second electric car will greatly stimulate GM's profitability. GM may also expand production capacity and production lines, hire new employees and open new factories. GM may shift its long-term development strategy focus. According to the strategy of its CEO Mary Barra, GM will gradually develop in the fields of automotive platforms, systems, software, etc., and will create a complete and systematic next-generation automotive ecological chain.
