August 27, 2007, Shanghai, China - Spreadtrum Communications, one of China's leading wireless baseband chip suppliers (NASDAQ: SPRD; hereinafter referred to as "Spreadtrum"), today announced the launch of the world's first commercial AVS audio and video decoder chip - Spreadtrum's new product SV6111 audio and video decoder chip. AVS is a digital audio and video codec technology standard with independent intellectual property rights in China. After repeatedly achieving great success in the field of wireless baseband chips, Spreadtrum believes that its SV6111 solution will also achieve breakthroughs in the field of audio and video chips.
The SV6111 audio and video decoding chip implements all the decoding functions required by the AVS standard and supports the MPEG-2 standard. The chip adopts the internationally advanced SoC design technology, integrates important software processing systems and more hardware processing functions, making it more integrated and capable, while significantly reducing costs and power consumption. The chip is also the first "system-level" AVS audio and video decoding chip with powerful multimedia processing functions.
The SV6111 chip supports real-time decoding in both high-definition (HD) and standard-definition (SD) modes, and has the mainstream functions required by current and future digital TV set-top box products. It can be used in areas such as network TV, cable digital TV, satellite digital TV, and terrestrial digital TV. The actual test performance of the chip is good, and the product performance is stable. Currently, the SV6111 chip samples have begun to be shipped, and it is believed that commercial products using the SV6111 chip are expected to be launched in the near future.
Regarding Spreadtrum's successful launch of the world's first AVS audio and video decoding chip, Professor Gao Wen, head of the AVS working group, said: "As a leading Chinese IC design company, Spreadtrum has made considerable efforts in China's independent intellectual property rights for the AVS standard and successfully launched the AVS audio and video decoding chip. This is an important milestone in the industrialization and commercialization of the AVS standard."
AVS is China's second-generation source codec standard with independent intellectual property rights. The SV6111 chip is also Spreadtrum's strong support for Chinese standards after successfully developing the world's first TD-SCDMA mobile phone core chip. This not only promotes the development of China's independent intellectual property source standards, but also plays an important role in making the information industry bigger and stronger.
Speaking of the product launch, Spreadtrum Marketing Vice President Cao Qiang said, "Spreadtrum has been committed to technical research and product development in the AVS field for several years. We believe that Spreadtrum is not only in a leading position in the development and commercialization of AVS chips, but has also been making important contributions to the advancement of the AVS standard. The launch of the SV6111 chip marks Spreadtrum's first important milestone in the field of audio and video chips."
