Mobile phone market highlights:
Wireless/Cellular Data
In 2009, global spending on wireless equipment and services exceeded $1 trillion for the first time. In 2009, the wireless supply chain's service and equipment revenue reached $900 billion. If we add in consumers' spending on wireless
With $110 billion spent on equipment and accessories, total spending reached $1.01 trillion.
iSuppli believes that in order to achieve another $1 trillion growth, the wireless value chain needs to change its model and pay more attention to maximizing the market share of various applications, content and services.
The global mobile phone market performed better than expected in 2009, with shipments falling from 1.23 billion units in 2008 to 1.14 billion units, a decrease of 6.7%.
In 2010, it is estimated that global mobile phone shipments will rise to 1.28 billion units, an increase of 12.1% over 2009. As shown in the attached figure.
Nokia consolidated its leading position in the global mobile phone market in the fourth quarter of 2009, with a shipment share of 38.9%, higher than 37.4% in the third quarter.
Among the top five mobile phone brands, apart from Nokia, only Samsung's market share increased in the fourth quarter, from 20.7% in the third quarter to 21.1%.
Smartphone
It is estimated that global smartphone shipments will rise to 246.9 million units in 2010, an increase of 12.1% from 181 million units in 2009, as shown in the attached figure.
In 2007, Nokia was the only smartphone vendor to have a double-digit market share. By 2009, three smartphone vendors had double-digit market shares: Nokia, RIM, and Apple.
Apple vs. Google numbers
Google attracted interest from smartphone manufacturers in 2010. About 30% of all smartphone models launched in 2010 are expected to use the Android operating system, more than three times the 9% in 2009.
More than 20 smartphone OEMs are expected to support Android in 2010, up from just four in 2009.
Mac OS accounted for 14% of smartphone unit shipments in 2009.
GPS/Navigation
It is estimated that the shipment of GPS mobile phones will reach 376 million units in 2010, accounting for about 28% of the total mobile phone market.
This proportion will rise to 33% in 2011.
It is estimated that 26% of GPS-enabled phones shipped in 2010 will use some kind of navigation application.
Wireless operators' navigation service revenue is expected to grow 37.6% in 2010.
Portable navigation device (PND) shipments are expected to peak in 2012 at nearly 45 million units before declining due to competition from smartphones.
About 4% of GPS phones are used with traffic information services. This proportion will rise to about 12% in 2013.
Wireless Infrastructure
Wireless infrastructure spending trends show that the wireless market is investing in 4G technology.
It is estimated that the 4G market will account for about 2.8% of the total base station operating revenue in 2010, rising to about 54% by 2013.
The market for base station equipment suppliers is consolidating. In 2006, seven suppliers accounted for 90% of the market. In 2009, five suppliers controlled 90% of the market.
