Have you ever had the following experience: when shopping in a supermarket, you find that the labels are incomplete and you don’t know the price of the things you want to buy; or when checking out, you find that the actual price is inconsistent with the price on the label... In fact, these are all the shortcomings of paper price tags: the high error rate of manual label replacement, labels are easy to lose, and data is easy to miss when updating, etc., which results in the price of goods on the shelf and the data at the checkout counter not being fully synchronized, causing trouble for shoppers, and also increasing the possibility of negative events such as price disputes.
The application of electronic shelf labels (Electronic Shelf Labels) will fundamentally improve the above problems. First of all, ESL labels can clearly and accurately display product information. ESL uses a plastic shell, which will not be easily damaged or lost like paper price tags. ESL labels can last for more than 3 years without replacing the battery, because ESL only consumes power when the data is updated, so ESL electronic labels are very suitable for supermarkets, warehousing, logistics and other fields.
According to statistics, there are 21,959 chain supermarkets in China, of which the top 12 (Carrefour, Wal-Mart, etc.) account for 58%, or 12,678 labels; on average, each supermarket has 45,000 labels, and each convenience store has 3,000 labels. The label capacity of supermarkets alone reaches 988 million. The global ESL market capacity reaches 2 billion, and the ESL market demand is huge.
As an important application of RFID in the Internet of Things, electronic display tags have gradually been introduced into China. Based on its own text display technology, Qualcomm China has developed low-power, high-resolution ESL products with bistable display screens as the medium. Its cost is only 1/3 of similar products on the market, which has overturned the entire ESL market and greatly promoted the progress of smart life.
The electronic shelf labels (ESL) developed by Qualcomm China have the following features: ① Data verification can be performed to prevent errors or omissions; ② Anti-theft and alarm functions; ③ Synchronous modification with the database; electronicization can reduce management loopholes; ④ Facilitate unified management and effective monitoring by the central headquarters; ⑤ Improve store image, customer satisfaction and social credibility; ⑥ Effectively reduce labor costs, management costs, etc.; ⑦ Environmentally friendly and energy-saving, and gradually becoming an industry trend.
Qualcomm China will soon showcase supermarket samples that have applied ESL electronic shelf labels, visually demonstrating the ease of use of ESL to domestic and foreign supermarkets, warehouses, logistics and other institutions. Please stay tuned.
