Researchers at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/E) have developed a new coating for cars that is less prone to getting dirty, saving users the trouble of having to frequently "pick up the car" for cleaning. The coating improves on the anti-scratch technology and is more effective at resisting water, dirt and scratches. However, there is still a problem: the durability of this technology still needs to be improved. This is because the nano-coating molecules are easily damaged, which means that the coating can easily lose its properties.

Researcher Catarina Esteves and her team at the Department of Chemical Engineering are working to solve this problem. The team says the goal is to keep the layer highly water-resistant for longer periods of time, making the car truly "self-cleaning."

In addition, the team also mentioned that these coatings can also be used in solar panels, mobile phones and aircraft. Esteves said that she hopes that this new coating can be officially produced within six to eight years. The price of the new coating will be similar to that of the coating currently on the market.
