The compression technologies currently used in the video field are mostly technologies similar to the MPEG series. Although MPEG-4 or H.264/AVC have achieved a high compression ratio, it is still difficult to use this compression method to achieve video transmission on 2.5G or even 2G mobile communication networks. Therefore, in general, mobile communication video services are mainly locked in services that will be provided after 3G is popularized. However, if video services can be provided immediately on 2G or 2.5G networks, it will bring huge benefits to telecommunications operators and will also allow mobile users to enjoy more and richer mobile services. Nancy Codec technology was developed for this purpose.

Nancy Codec is mainly developed by Office Noa of Japan. Currently, the technology is used by major telecom operators in Asia and Europe and America, including J-Phone and NTT DoCoMo of Japan, and China Mobile Communications Corporation. Traditional video compression requires a high-speed CPU or a dedicated processing chip, which not only takes up space but also increases power consumption. In contrast, software solutions like Nancy Codec do not require a high-speed CPU or a dedicated processing chip, so they can solve the mobile communication market's demand for mobile devices with video processing functions.

Nancy Codec is a technology independently developed mainly using the concept of SMSP (Structure Meta Sale Polygon). Its principle is to divide the motion image into many models of different shapes and sizes, and then compress them. Because it adopts a new simple arithmetic operation rule, it does not require motion estimation and discrete cosine transform (DCT), so the calculation amount is small and the transmission rate is fast.

Nancy Codec is a compression technology with considerable advantages. Because Nancy Codec realizes video compression by software, the hardware processing capacity only needs 10% of MPEG4, and the operation speed is 1 times faster than MPEG4, and the compression rate is one tenth of MPEG4, so the video can be transmitted using the existing mobile communication network. Currently, many companies have launched DSP chips that support Nancy Codec, including Texas Instruments, Epson, etc. In addition, there are many telecommunications companies behind it, including Japan's J-phone and China Mobile. However, although Nancy Codec does have advantages in the development and application, it also has some problems: since Japan's OFFICE NOA company exclusively owns this technology, it is impossible to be very open in terms of technology, so it is not conducive to the further development of the technology. On the other hand, it may cause difficulties in promotion and application due to conflicts of interest among all parties.
