Beijing, China – March 9, 2022 – Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) recently launched the low-power, high-performance bioimpedance (BioZ) analog front end (AFE) MAX30009, designed to help reduce the size and extend the life of BioZ remote patient monitoring (RPM) devices . Designed for the development of small-size, battery-powered wearable continuous monitoring devices, this on-chip AFE provides clinical-grade vital sign measurements of bioimpedance analysis in applications such as wearable devices and medical-grade patches that monitor health conditions to assess patient health.

Many vital signs monitors, chest patches, pressure monitors, BioZ and wearable healthcare devices must be powered by small batteries to achieve compact, convenient and comfortable design goals. The MAX30009 is a low-power device with multiple power optimization options that reduces micro-battery consumption and thus extends the life of BioZ wearable devices. Its power consumption is 62% lower than that of competing products at the same level, effectively extending the measurement cycle of wearable patches and vital signs monitoring devices. The highly integrated AFE is also 30% smaller than competing products at the same level, helping designers reduce the size of vital signs measurement equipment and bringing a more comfortable and convenient experience to consumers and patients.

Bioimpedance analysis equipment is a convenient way for healthcare professionals to measure body fat percentage and physical condition (such as respiration and impedance cardiography). The MAX30009 monitors BioZ information through I, Q synchronous measurement, as well as 2-electrode (bipolar) and 4-electrode (quadrupole) configurations . As a result, flexible input modes can be provided in BioZ measurements, and different sampling rates are allowed to support BioZ measurements for different medical procedures. By expanding the measurement range, respiratory rate, galvanic skin response and galvanic skin activity, bioelectrical impedance, impedance cardiography, body composition and fluid analysis, or volume tracing can be monitored to gain a deeper understanding of the patient's health status.

MAX30009 BioZ AFE key features:

Smaller size: High integration enables a 30% smaller design, which reduces system size and improves patient comfort

Lower power consumption: Power consumption reduced by 62%

High performance: provides I-channel and Q-channel measurements, bipolar and quadrupole configurations, supports sampling rates from 16sps to 4ksps and wideband measurements from 16Hz to 891KHz

“Medical wearables are saving lives by measuring the health of millions of patients with a variety of conditions,” said Dr. Benjamin Sanchez, assistant professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine and bioimpedance expert. “Bioimpedance (BioZ) monitoring has given healthcare professionals and scientists access to a host of new, clinically relevant physiological parameters that are having a meaningful impact on patients, including stress, hydration levels, and early detection of cancer. Devices such as the MAX30009 AFE, which I use in my research, have played an important role in making BioZ monitoring devices more accessible to more medical device developers and fitness consumers.”
