MediaTek recently released the MediaTek Sensio smart health solution. The solution is based on the industry's first 6-in-1 smart health chip MT6381, which consists of highly integrated modules and related supporting software. It is the most complete smart health solution to date. MediaTek Sensio can measure the user's heart rate, heart rate variability, blood pressure trend, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), electrocardiogram (ECG), photoplethysmogram (PPG) and other six physiological data in just about 60 seconds, and can be integrated into smartphones or mobile phone accessories, allowing mobile phone users to understand their physical condition anytime and anywhere, and promote mobile phones to become personal health partners.20171225-mtk-1

Similar usage scenarios are actually very similar to the heart rate measurement previously adopted by Samsung in the Galaxy S series. However, Dr. Yen-Chi Lee, Director of Product Planning and Marketing of MediaTek's Wireless Communications Business Unit, emphasized that the new technology can measure more physiological data, and users can understand their personal physical condition more comprehensively through their mobile phones.20171225-mtk-2

Compared with previous decentralized solutions, the MediaTek Sensio hardware module integrates front-end signal processing, multiple sensors and other electrical and optical components, and can be directly embedded in terminal devices such as smartphones and accessories, providing terminal manufacturers with more flexible customization space. The light-emitting diode (LED) and photosensor on the module can measure the user's fingertips' response to red and infrared light. Through the contact between the fingertips and the sensor, MediaTek Sensio can form a closed loop between the user's heart and the biosensor to measure the electrocardiogram and photoplethysmogram.20171225-mtk-3

In addition, in terms of software, MediaTek Sensio can help manufacturers develop their own exclusive applications, or utilize third-party applications and developer add-ons.

MediaTek Sensio can measure six important physiological data in about 60 seconds:

• Heart rate - measures the number of heart beats per minute

• Heart rate variability – measures the changes in the time intervals between heart beats

• Blood pressure trend - measure blood pressure trend and help users understand blood pressure data over a period of time

• Oxygen saturation (SpO2) – measures the amount of oxygen in the blood

• Electrocardiogram (ECG) – measures the electrical activity of the heart over time and displays it graphically

• Photoplethysmogram (PPG) – measures changes in blood volumeMediaTek 20171225-mtk-420171225-mtk-520171225-mtk-620171225-mtk-7Sensio module specifications: • Integrated red and infrared LEDs for reflective PPG measurement + single-channel ECG analog front end• Compact OLGA 22-pin package with dimensions of 6.8 mm x 4.93 mm x 1.2 mm• External bill of materials (BOM): 4 capacitors + 2 electrodes• I2C /SPI digital interface

MediaTek expects to provide this technical solution in early 2018, but is unable to disclose the first batch of application manufacturers and actual application devices for the time being.
