The general purpose timers (TIM2 to TIM5) consist of a 16-bit or 32-bit auto-reload counter driven by a programmable divider. They can be used for a variety of purposes, including measuring the pulse length of an input signal (input capture) or generating an output waveform (output compare and PWM). The pulse length and waveform period can be modulated from a few microseconds to a few milliseconds using the timer's prescaler and the RCC clock controller divider. They are completely independent and do not share any resources.

The general TIMx timer functions include:
1. 16-bit (TIM3 and TIM4) or 32-bit (TIM2 and TIM5) counter, count up, down, up/down auto-reload.
2. A 16-bit programmable prescaler (changeable at run time) is used to subdivide the counter clock frequency between 1 and 65535.
3. Up to 4 independent channels can be used for:
- Input Capture
- Output Compare
- PWM generation (edge and center aligned modes)
- Single pulse output mode
4. Synchronous circuits that use external signals to control timers and timer interconnections
5. Interrupt/DMA generation for the following events:
- Update: counter overflow/underflow, counter initialization (by software or internal/external trigger)
- Trigger events (counter start, stop, initialize or internal/external trigger counting)
- Input Capture
- Output Compare
6. Support for positioning incremental (orthogonal) encoder and Hall sensor circuits
7. Trigger input as external clock or cycle-by-cycle current management
