Recently, SABIC, a world-renowned diversified chemical company, won five awards in the 2023 Edison Awards for its innovative solutions that fully meet the needs of customers and partners across the value chain and are deeply aligned with Saudi Arabia's "Vision 2030". The Edison Awards are intended to honor the world's most innovative products, services and business leaders. This is the third consecutive year that SABIC has been recognized and the second consecutive year that the company has won at least five awards.
In this year's selection, SABIC won three gold awards and two bronze awards in the three major selection areas of "Food and Agriculture", "Material Science" and "Sustainable Development" with its innovative products and solutions. These awards fully demonstrate SABIC's continuous breakthroughs in science, technology and innovation, redefining the future of the chemical industry, thereby helping the company and its customers better respond to major global challenges.
Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh, CEO of SABIC, said: “We are honored to be recognized for the third consecutive year with the Edison Award, which fully affirms our company’s leadership in promoting new technologies and innovations. In the future, we look forward to continuing on the path of becoming a preeminent leader in the global chemical industry, further driving business growth through technological innovation, and providing innovative solutions for the future, thereby helping to create a more sustainable world.”
SABIC won awards in multiple fields, highlighting the wide coverage of the company's innovative solutions . In particular, this year's Edison Invention Award specifically recognized SABIC's outstanding contributions in the field of sustainable development. SABIC worked with partners to innovate and develop frozen food packaging solutions using recycled marine plastics, winning the gold award in the "Green Repair" category. This solution uses certified recyclable polyethylene from SABIC's TRUCIRCLE™ sustainable solution, whose raw materials come from post-consumer plastics recycled from marine aquaculture areas and rivers. Through cooperation with Polivouga, a manufacturer of flexible film products, and Nueva Pescanova Group, a brand that produces frozen seafood products, a true "circular product" was produced.
In the “Food and Agricultural Development” category, SABIC won the Gold Award for its Blue Urea solution, a sustainable, low-carbon nitrogen fertilizer. Made by SABIC Agri-Nutrients using zero-carbon emission ammonia, the product recently received the world’s first independent third-party certification for the production of blue ammonia from TÜV Rheinland, Germany’s leading independent testing, inspection and certification body. To achieve the “blue ammonia” certification, most of the CO2 associated with the production process needs to be captured and recycled in downstream applications.
In addition, in the field of food and agriculture, SABIC's "Next Generation Fertilizer" won the bronze award. This product can increase crop yields while reducing the need for large amounts of fertilizers. This unique multi-element foliar fertilizer combines crop yield-increasing and protection ingredients in a single formula to provide plants with nutrition and lodging resistance. SABIC's research shows that the use of this fertilizer can reduce fertilizer use by up to 25% while increasing yields by up to 17%.
Finally, in the “Material Science” category, SABIC’s innovative high-temperature resistant EXTEM™ resin for cutting-edge circuits and electric vehicle boards received a gold award. EXTEM™ resin helps manufacturers mount optical connectors on printed circuit boards, simplifies the assembly process, and enables mass production of circuit boards required for technology products. In addition, SABIC’s NORYL™ resin received a bronze award in the “Enhanced Performance” grouping, which can be used as an insulating film in electric vehicle batteries and charging systems to improve safety.
The Edison Award is named after Thomas Alva Edison, who successfully changed the world with a series of major inventions, research and development methods and innovative achievements . Since its launch in 1987, the Edison Award has been committed to rewarding, honoring and cultivating innovative achievements and innovators. The annual selection activity is intended to recognize outstanding achievements in product and service development, marketing, design and innovation in that year.
