BICS and Mavenir Collaborate to Launch VoLTE Solution to Enable Roaming Interoperability after 2G/3G Network Deprecation
Solution helps bridge the digital divide between 2G/3G networks and new networks that no longer support traditional voice communications
Beijing, China, April 6, 2023 – BICS, a leading international communications platform service provider, announced a collaboration with Mavenir, a network software provider committed to building future-proof networks with cloud-native solutions that can run on any cloud, to launch a new VoLTE solution to help global operators cope with various issues that may arise from the withdrawal of 2G/3G networks. Mavenir is a network software provider dedicated to building future-proof networks with cloud-native solutions that can run on any cloud.
Different operators around the world have different timetables for network decommissioning, and they all face the challenge of achieving roaming interoperability between old and new networks during the decommissioning process. The VoLTE solution jointly developed by BICS and Mavenir is based on Mavenir's cloud-native IMS solution, which can effectively bridge the growing roaming service gap between 2G/3G networks and 4G/5G technologies.
Mikael Schachne, Vice President of Telecom Services Market at BICS , said: “As mobile technology continues to evolve, ensuring seamless roaming between networks is critical. As a global communications platform service provider, BICS is committed to connecting the global community and creating business opportunities. Through this partnership, we will support operators around the world to continue to provide an excellent user experience for their roaming customers, while we will also leverage our extensive global network coverage and expertise to tap into more revenue opportunities for them.”
If seamless communication between different networks around the world cannot be guaranteed, roamers may have a bad roaming experience. For example, a 2G/3G user entering an area with only 4G/5G networks will not be able to make voice calls in that area. This will undoubtedly greatly affect the user experience of cross-border roamers and may even have more serious consequences, such as preventing such roaming users from calling an ambulance or fire service in an emergency.
The new VoLTE solution combines BICS’ network coverage and expertise in international roaming with Mavenir’s network software to perfectly solve this problem. For operators that still provide 2G/3G services, the VoLTE solution can provide a seamless roaming experience for their users, even if the area they enter has completely shut down the 2G/3G network. For operators that are promoting 2G/3G network withdrawal, the new VoLTE solution will help these roamers access their 4G/5G networks, thereby obtaining this part of the inbound roaming revenue that was previously easy to lose. In short, the new VoLTE solution is a win-win choice for both visited and home network operators in their response to the global 2G/3G network withdrawal.
“When talking about the future of telecommunications , many focus on next-generation innovations such as 5G and even 6G. These are important, but we must ensure that our deployments do not create coverage gaps that reduce operator revenues and potentially widen the digital divide,” said Ashok Khuntia, President of Core Networks at Mavenir. “Mavenir’s cloud-native IMS solution optimizes mobile voice services, ensuring consistent quality of service and voice service continuity for subscribers on both new and legacy networks, enabling global operators to achieve business growth.”
