Nordic Semiconductor's latest power management ICs now available for sale
Nordic Semiconductor nPM1100 PMIC is ideal for advanced wearable wireless devices, outperforming all other PMIC solutions in terms of efficiency-to-size ratio
Shanghai, China, October 27, 2022 – Farnell, a global distributor of electronic components products and solutions under Avnet, has launched Nordic Semiconductor's latest power management IC (PMIC) nPM1100. Compared with other PMIC solutions in the industry, nPM1100 has a higher efficiency-size ratio and a PCB footprint as low as 23mm². This ultra-small PMIC product is ideal for a variety of space-constrained applications, including battery charging and power supply in handheld devices, portable products, advanced wearable wireless devices and connected medical devices.
Designers of small wireless products have long been trying various methods to extend battery life and add more functionality without increasing size. Since increasing battery capacity necessarily increases physical size, improving energy efficiency has become the only way to extend battery life and achieve improved functionality. Nordic Semiconductor's latest nPM1100 PMIC combines small size, high integration and efficient power conversion, allowing designers to extend battery life or increase power capacity without increasing the physical size of electronic components.
The nPM1100 is a dedicated PMIC with a high-efficiency dual-mode configurable buck regulator and an integrated battery charger. It is an essential accessory for Nordic Semiconductor nRF52® Series and nRF53® Series System-on-Chip (SoC), ensuring reliable power supply and stable operation while maximizing battery life through high efficiency and low quiescent current. The nPM1100 can also be used as a general-purpose PMIC device.
The nPM1100 PMIC is available now for immediate shipment from element14 and features:
• Supports USB battery charging and other power sources, ultra-small PCB footprint (including passive components), and power conversion efficiency up to 92%.
• The integrated battery charger is designed to charge Li-Ion and Li-Polymer batteries with a selectable 4.1 or 4.2 V termination voltage, supporting battery chemistries with nominal voltages of 3.6 and 3.7 V, respectively.
• Three charging modes can be automatically selected: automatic trickle charge, constant current and constant voltage charge.
• USB compatible, can be charged via USB, with port auto-detection function.
• 100% pin-out configurable, no software required.
• Extends battery life for any nRF52® or nRF53® Series SoC-based application that uses a rechargeable battery.
• Supply ample current to power the SoC and any additional circuitry.
Simon Meadmore, Vice President Product and Supplier Management at Farnell and element14, said: “We are delighted to introduce a product from Nordic Semiconductor that is revolutionising the PMIC market. The demand for innovative, compact professional wearable wireless devices and connected medical applications is growing exponentially, creating a huge opportunity for connected medical devices in hospitals and patients’ homes. Nordic Semiconductor’s PMICs provide designers with the tools to deliver more power and higher efficiency in an ultra-small package.”
Nordic Semiconductor is a fabless semiconductor company based in Norway that develops wireless communication technologies for the Internet of Things. The company is actively committed to the development of ultra-low power wireless technology and plays a key role in the future development of wireless technology. Nordic Semiconductor was founded in 1983 and has more than 1,300 employees worldwide.
