LED technology is increasingly being used in cars, and has now expanded from taillights to headlights.
People who have been following Audi's latest models may have noticed that LEDs (light-emitting diodes), which have been increasingly used in brake lights over the past few years, are beginning to appear in car headlights. In fact, LED car light technology is not just for decoration, it will be the future direction of automotive lighting.
Great potential, lighting effect needs to be improved
Word explanation: Light-emitting diodes are made of crystalline semiconductor compounds that can directly convert electrical energy into light energy. Gallium arsenide and gallium phosphide are its basic materials.
Automotive engineers and designers have a strong interest in light-emitting diodes. Compared with traditional incandescent lamps, headlights made of LEDs not only have high lighting effects, but also low energy consumption. Under the same illumination conditions, high-power light-emitting diodes require half the amount of electricity as halogen headlights. Although LEDs are not as energy-efficient as xenon headlights at present, the technology still has great potential for development. Between 2004 and 2006 alone, the average performance of LEDs increased by nearly two times. Professionals predict that by 2008, the illumination of LED will be three times higher than that of 2004. Meanwhile, the focus of automotive experts is on white multi-chip LEDs, and they expect that by 2009 or 2010, LEDs will be able to produce the same power as current xenon lamps. In addition to energy saving, LEDs also have many advantages that other materials cannot match, such as a lifespan of up to 10,000 hours, which is basically equivalent to the normal service life of a car.
Array technology drives the evolution of lighting methods
Interpretation: In the automotive industry, the application of LEDs is based on LED array technology—concentrating many high-power LEDs on a circuit board, which is called an array. This combination has powerful functions, and each LED on the circuit board can be controlled independently, so that the distribution of light can be arranged according to actual requirements.
In the long run, all conceivable lighting functions can be realized by controlling the LEDs, such as the distance adjustment of dynamic light and the adjustment of the fog lamp angle. In addition, functions such as highway mode, active lighting functions or cornering lighting functions can be adjusted by controlling single or multiple LEDs. With this technology, headlight country mode and highway mode similar to those owned by Mercedes-Benz can be completed through simple program settings. It can be foreseen that in the future, movable components used in intelligent lighting systems may be completely replaced by LED products.
