Cree's XR-E series of high-power LEDs topped the list of the year's most breakthrough technologies (see "White Power LED Lights The Way With A160-Lumen Output," page 39 of the Nov. 16, 2006 issue). And Cree has been working tirelessly to improve the XR-E series.
After continuous improvements in die, packaging and materials, Cree introduced the cold light series of LED products. These LED lamps are "improved versions of the XLamp series with higher efficiency and good color stability throughout the life," said Deb Lovig, project manager at Cree.
Cold Light Specifications
The above cold light LED lamp can provide up to 250 lumens of cool white light output - a 56% increase. Its cool white light output (5000K to 10000K color correction temperature or CCT) can reach 114 lumens at 350mA, with an efficacy of more than 90 lumens per watt.
In addition, Cree has also developed a warm light series of products, which are mainly used for ordinary indoor lighting, but are also often used for outdoor applications abroad. Neutral and warm white light LEDs (3700K to 5000K CCT) output up to 80.6 lumens at a current of 350mA, and the efficacy can reach 67 lumens/watt, which is the same as the efficacy and color temperature value of small fluorescent lamps.
"These are the best values reported by packaged high-power LEDs." Paul Scheidt, product manager of Cree's solid-state lighting products, pointed out. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the United States verified the results.
The white light high-power LED chip is manufactured on a silicon carbide (SiC) substrate, on which there is also a layer of indium nitride (InGaN) on the substrate. This surface-mount chip with reflow soldering has a size of only 7x9mm.
Solid-state light sources are more efficient than traditional light sources and have a longer life. They do not require a lot of maintenance operations, making them a cost-effective alternative for many general lighting and backlighting equipment. As a result, solid-state light sources have quickly become popular and are commonly used in office buildings, parking lots, outdoor and indoor lighting, automatic headlights, garage and warehouse compartment lighting, camera flashes, projection displays and even flashlights.
In fact, LED lighting has made the parking lot and lobby of Cree's headquarters much brighter (Figure 2). More and more lighting equipment manufacturers are using Cree's LED light sources in their industrial and household products.
