According to foreign media New Atlas, the VaakEye system has been deployed in more than 50 stores across Japan, which can constantly monitor the footage captured by security cameras. Once the system detects suspicious activity, it will send reminders to employees, who can immediately view the footage and take action on it. Vaak is also preparing to launch an Amazon-style automatic checkout service.
Vaak is the third startup of Ryo Tanaka, who spoke to New Atlas by phone from his Tokyo office and said his key driver was to make a difference. "I wanted to make a social contribution globally," he told New Atlas. "There are many data management companies, but no company can manage unstructured data. My first insight was that in order to build an unstructured data management company, I would focus on human behavior through video images."
VaakEye, the company’s first product, launched in March as a subscription service, is a cloud-based deep learning AI system that costs $162 per month per security camera in a user’s store and continuously monitors the footage, automatically detects “suspicious behavior” and instantly sends alerts to store employees.
The system has been trained on more than 100,000 hours of footage, using both actors to set up crime scenes and reams of real-life security camera data. What is it looking for? "Actions associated with criminals," says Ryo Tanaka. "Anxiously looking around, searching for cameras, moving a little faster than usual."
Each behavior that the VaakEye system notices is weighted as suspicious, and once a customer reaches a certain threshold, the system sends their alert (including video clips) to the appropriate staff. "The system is currently running in 50 stores in Japan," said Ryo Tanaka, "and we are preparing to launch it globally. Currently, the accuracy rate of detecting crimes using experimental data is 81%."
VaakEye analyzes human motion at more than 100 points across the body, and the company believes it will soon be able to detect other types of antisocial behavior, including physical aggression and more complex movements. Vaak's next project, due out in August, will further expand on similar technology. Using the same security camera video stream, it can watch what customers take from the shelves and offer them a completely checkout-free shopping experience, just like the Amazon Go super convenience store.
Instead of using an Amazon account, customers will have to set up a VaakPay account on their mobile device and then click a button to let the store know they're there to shop. The system will track what they pick up and drop off and automatically charge them for what they take away, without anyone having to step foot inside a counter.
The system will also be able to work for non-VaakEye account holders "if we can provide a cash register," Ryo Tanaka said. In this case, users can bring their purchases to the counter and simply pay for them, with the system tracking what they've bought. So even if users pay cash, their waiting time can be reduced. "Our vision is a convenient world without crime or accidents," he said.
