According to news on December 26, Samsung Electronics announced at the end of 2022 that it would join hands with South Korean Internet giant Naver to jointly invest in AI semiconductor solutions.
According to Korean media BusinessKorea, the two companies have made major breakthroughs in AI semiconductors and developed the first solution chip, which is 8 times more energy efficient than Nvidia's H100 product.
The semiconductor solution promoted by both parties is a field programmable logic gate array (FPGA) chip customized specifically for Naver's HyperCLOVA X large language model.
Naver said the chip uses LPDDR memory and is eight times more energy efficient than Nvidia's AI GPU, but did not elaborate on other details about the chip.
The collaboration between the two companies focuses on using Samsung's advanced process technology to leverage high-tech memory solutions such as Compute Storage, Processing in Memory (PIM), Processing Near Memory (PNM) and Compute Express Link (CXL), and integrate Naver’s strength in software and AI algorithms.
Jinman Han, Executive Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing, Samsung Electronics Memory said:
Through our collaboration with Naver, we will develop cutting-edge semiconductor solutions to solve memory bottlenecks in large-scale artificial intelligence systems.
