Nordic Semiconductor extends leadership in ultra-low power wireless connectivity for the IoT with the launch of the nRF54L15, nRF54L10 and nRF54L05 next-generation wireless SoCs
New advanced low-power Bluetooth SoC brings higher efficiency and superior processing power to improve performance and flexibility for a wide range of IoT applications
Oslo, Norway – November 13, 2024 – Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in low-power wireless connectivity solutions, today launched the nRF54L Series of wireless SoC products, including the previously released nRF54L15™ and the new nRF54L10™ and nRF54L05™. This advanced product series sets a new industry standard, providing significantly enhanced efficiency, excellent processing power and diverse design options to meet the growing range of low-power Bluetooth and IoT applications and customer needs.
All three devices in the new nRF54L series integrate 2.4 GHz radio and MCU functions (including CPU, memory and peripherals) into a single ultra-low power chip, supporting a wide range of applications from simple high-volume products to demanding advanced designs. Main applications include wearable devices, smart bracelets, game controllers, HID devices, as well as medical devices, smart homes and industrial IoT products. The nRF54L15 is ideal for demanding applications, while the nRF54L10 and nRF54L05 are targeted at high-volume applications such as smart tags, electronic shelf labels, asset trackers and other cost-sensitive IoT devices.
“The launch of the nRF54L family is a proud moment for us,” said Oyvind Strom, Executive Vice President, Short Range Products at Nordic Semiconductor. “We are already the world’s leading provider of Bluetooth low energy solutions and this new family of wireless SoCs reinforces our position at the forefront of low power wireless technology. We are expanding the family with the nRF54L10 and nRF54L05, and the nRF54L15, providing greater flexibility and exceptional energy efficiency to support a wide range of Bluetooth low energy and IoT applications.”
Advanced IoT products for the future
The nRF54L Series SoCs are equipped with an Arm® Cortex®-M33 processor clocked at 128 MHz and an ultra-low-power 2.4 GHz radio. They are designed to support advanced application software and wireless protocol stacks on a single chip, reducing the need for an external MCU or additional memory.
The nRF54L15 has the largest memory capacity in the series, with 1.5 MB non-volatile memory (NVM) and 256 KB RAM, making it ideal for demanding applications; the mid-range nRF54L10 has 1.0 MB NVM and 192 KB RAM; and the nRF54L05 is optimized for less demanding, cost-sensitive applications, with 0.5 MB NVM and 96 KB RAM.
This product series offers up to 35 GPIOs and an ultra-compact 2.4 x 2.2 mm WLCSP package option, which is 50% smaller than the similar nRF52840. Nordic offers the nRF54L series in a 6x6 pin-to-pin compatible QFN package family, ensuring design flexibility and manufacturing cost optimization.
In addition to expanded memory options, the product family integrates a low-power RISC-V coprocessor to support advanced application requirements without the need for additional external components, reducing BOM costs and enabling compact designs.
Enhanced multi-protocol support
The nRF54L series supports Bluetooth Low Energy, Bluetooth Mesh, Thread, Matter, Zigbee, Amazon Sidewalk, and 2.4 GHz proprietary protocols, and has enhanced features such as up to 4 Mbps data transfer rate. This series is future-oriented and supports the Bluetooth 6.0 specification, including Bluetooth Channel Sounding.
Next-generation wireless SoC
The nRF54L series takes the market-leading nRF52 series to a whole new level, with lower power consumption, and doubles and triples the processing power and processing efficiency respectively. Nordic uses deep design expertise to build new products, including proprietary intellectual property (IP) such as low-leakage RAM and advanced radio technology. By taking the lead in transitioning to the 22 nm process node (TSMC 22ULL® technology), it not only improves ultra-low power consumption and processing efficiency, but also significantly enhances the resilience of Nordic's supply chain.
Security is a top priority in product design, and by integrating features such as TrustZone isolation, tamper sensors and hardened cryptographic accelerators, this product series can meet important advanced security requirements.
Development Support and Availability
The new nRF54L15 DK (Development Kit) is available for ordering today and is designed to enable a broad range of evaluation and development opportunities for the entire nRF54L Series, including the nRF54L10 and nRF54L05. The kit includes a software ecosystem that enables rapid development and proof of concept, as well as detailed documentation, hands-on online courses and world-class technical support.
Nordic Semiconductor is sampling the nRF54L15 to selected customers now and will be in full production along with the nRF54L10 and nRF54L05 by the end of this year.
