Infineon and Fingerprints create one-stop solution SECORA™ Pay Bio, taking biometric payment card technology to new heights


[December 2, 2022, Munich, Germany and Gothenburg, Sweden] Recently, Infineon Technologies AG and Fingerprint Cards AB (Fingerprints™) announced that they have signed a joint development and commercialization agreement to provide biometric payment smart cards. Create a plug-and-play one-stop solution. The goal of this collaboration is to simplify the production of biometric smart cards so that they can be produced as easily as standard dual-interface payment cards.

This complete SECORA™ Pay Bio one-stop solution will feature Fingerprints’ FPC1323 sensor and its biometric software algorithm, as well as Infineon’s upcoming SLC39B security chip. The off-the-shelf solution will also feature the pre-certified Java Card™ operating system with built-in biometric applets for Mastercard and Visa. With the innovative biometric coil module (BCoM) packaging technology developed by Infineon based on inductive coupling technology, the manufacturing process of biometric smart cards can be greatly simplified and the BoM (bill of materials) cost can be significantly reduced. This will enable card manufacturers to leverage existing card manufacturing equipment to produce biometric payment cards and enable scalable, efficient volume production.

According to analysis agency ABI Research, under optimistic conditions, the issuance of biometric payment proximity cards will reach 140 million by 2025 to meet consumers' needs for more convenient and secure biometric authentication in personal payment transactions. . In daily life, biometric card holders only need to place their fingers on the card's sensor and touch the card to the terminal to complete identity verification. The biggest advantage of this payment method is that payment can be completed at the point of sale terminal (POS) without a password. Biometric payment cards can provide a more convenient and hygienic payment experience without the need for minimum transaction limits. Starting from the first transaction, every transaction will be two-factor authenticated, greatly reducing the possibility of fraudulent use if the card is lost or stolen.


SECORA Pay Bio will further expand Infineon’s proven SECORA Pay family of one-stop solutions to address the rapidly growing biometric bank card market. SLC39B is an advanced system-on-chip (SoC) cryptographic processor developed by Infineon. It is equipped with an integrated power supply, large-capacity memory and rich peripherals, and has first-class non-contact performance. Infineon's BCoM, an innovative dual-interface coil module (CoM) tailored for SECORA Pay Bio, integrates Fingerprints' advanced sensors and Infineon's upcoming security chip into a single package. With the help of inductive coupling technology, the card’s antenna and module no longer need to be connected by cables, greatly improving the robustness and long-term reliability of biometric payment cards.
