According to CNBC, on April 17, Qualcomm announced that it had reached a settlement with Apple on patent lawsuits, and the two giants will work together again.
After reaching a settlement with Qualcomm, Intel's position in Apple's baseband supply has been unclear. Now the latest news shows that the latter has withdrawn from baseband services.
Intel announced that it will exit the 5G smartphone modem business and focus on 5G network infrastructure and other data center businesses.
"The company will continue to satisfy customers for its existing 4G smartphone modem product line, but does not anticipate introducing 5G modem products in smartphones, including those originally planned for 2020," Intel said in a statement late Tuesday.
Apple and Qualcomm have reached a six-year global patent licensing agreement that could be extended for another two years. They also agreed that Qualcomm would continue to supply components to Apple, which could mean Qualcomm's modems will appear in iPhones again.
For Intel, if it loses Apple as a major customer and cannot launch 5G chips this year, there will indeed not be much market space left for it.
