Rohde & Schwarz presents new Q/V-band RF upconverter for testing satellite payloads

In order to enable end users of satellite communication links to continuously obtain higher data rates, satellite operators are using higher communication frequencies, such as the Q/V band with a larger bandwidth. Rohde & Schwarz's new R&S SZV100A Q/V band RF upconverter provides a solution for testing wideband transponders in very high throughput satellite (VHTS) payloads. The R&S SZV100A has a 2 GHz modulation bandwidth, covering the entire frequency range from 36 GHz to 56 GHz.
The Q/V band provides greater bandwidth for satellite feeder links, making it an ideal choice for implementing the upcoming high bit rate data links. These high bit rates can provide end users with large amounts of data for future communication systems and cellular backhaul networks. In the new space environment, operators of conventional geostationary satellites as well as LEO satellites are gradually exploring the advantages of these new satellite frequency bands.
The Q/V band places high demands on microwave components, which means that they must undergo extensive testing during development and validation. RF modules and systems such as amplifiers, frequency converters, receiver modules and complete satellite payloads must all be tested in the Q/V band. Especially for testing satellite payloads, the demand for test equipment must meet high-quality signals. The R&S SZV100A Q/V band RF upconverter in combination with the R&S SMW200A vector signal generator can continuously cover all satellite frequency bands from VHF to V band, as well as the 5G bands in the Q/V band.
This test solution includes the R&S SMW200A vector signal generator, the R&S SMA100B RF and microwave signal generator, and the R&S SZV100A Q/V band RF upconverter. With its excellent RF performance, the R&S SMW200A can provide an intermediate frequency signal with a modulation bandwidth of up to 2 GHz, while the R&S SMA100B can provide a high-precision local oscillator signal. The maximum output power of the R&S SZV100A is up to +16 dBm (1 dB compression point).
The compact housing design, low weight and mounting points of the R&S SZV100A allow it to be installed as close as possible to the device under test, for example outside a thermal vacuum chamber (TVAC). The distance between the IF source or LO source and the R&S SZV100A can be up to 10 meters, allowing for optimized test scenarios.
The upconverter and signal generator can be remotely operated via a LAN connection using PC software. All devices can be configured simply and conveniently with the R&S SZV remote control software.
The R&S SZV100A is ideal for low-cost upgrades to existing test systems. With the help of control software, a test solution consisting of the R&S SZV100A, R&S SMW200A and R&S SMA100B can be operated as a single instrument.
