MediaTek's big move: Deca-core smartphones to be released next year
In 2015, when Qualcomm made its own mistake, MediaTek stole the spotlight. From the beginning of the year to the end of the year, the latter was mentioned much more frequently than in previous years. But it is not easy to make a comeback. As a weapon for MediaTek to attack the high-end market, Helio X10 was beaten back to its original form by Xiaomi, Meizu, LeTV and other teammates as soon as it was released, becoming a synonym for low price and high configuration. Fortunately, MediaTek still has a backup plan - X20.
The simplest and most straightforward introduction to Helio X20 is: the world’s first deca-core processor.
There is no need to ask what the practical significance of "ten cores" is. Although manufacturers will not say it too absolutely, the simplest digital logic of "eight cores are better than four cores, and ten cores are better than eight cores" will always be subtly instilled into users. If manufacturers go a step further and provide all kinds of data at the press conference, the audience will basically have no choice but to accept it. It has to be said that this trick is still tried and tested.
Of course, in addition to the cooperation with mobile phone manufacturers, Helio X20 has also received a lot of attention in the industry. The reason is that in 2016, in addition to MediaTek's big move that has been held back for a year, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820, Samsung's 8890, and Huawei's Kirin 950 will all be on the market. Whether MediaTek can maintain its upward momentum in 2016, a year full of strong competitors, is a very critical issue.
In terms of performance, Leifeng.com made a detailed analysis of this chip as early as May this year :
"This world's first 10-core processor uses three clusters. The three processor clusters include a low-power 1.4GHz quad-core A53 processor, a 2.0GHz quad-core A53 processor that balances performance and power consumption, and a 2.5GHz dual-core A72 processor for sprinting extreme performance. In order to make such three-cluster processors run normally, MediaTek has also developed a customized interconnect IP, which MediaTek calls "MediaTek Coherent System Interconnect" (MCSI). "
As for the performance of the so-called "MCSI", we can only wait until the final product is released to find out. According to reliable sources, Helio X20 will officially start mass production in the second quarter of 2016, so if nothing unexpected happens, mobile phones equipped with X20 will appear in the next wave of domestic mobile phones.
In addition, with the advent of 10-core phones, are 12-core phones far behind? As the initiator, when asked about the development progress of the "12-core processor", MediaTek China General Manager said that multi-core is a product driven by real needs, and it can better balance the performance and power consumption of smartphones . But will there be a 12-core processor? MediaTek has not yet, and there is no guarantee that there will be no such thing in the future.
