The wait is finally here.
On June 6, Apple held the most powerful WWDC developer conference in recent years. The core protagonist is the Apple Vision Pro, a mixed reality headset whose hardware is fully capable of "opening up the first year of VR/AR again."
Apple has released a total of 5 hardware and 6 major system updates this time:
1. VR glasses Apple Vision Pro, 15-inch MacBook Air, M2 Ultra chip, M2 Max/M2 Ultra version of Mac Studio, M2 Ultra Mac Pro
2. visonOS system, iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, watchOS 10, tvOS 17, AirPods and smart home devices for VR glasses.

Apple Vision Pro: One more thing I’ve been waiting for for several years
Apple Vision Pro is a solution for realizing AR (augmented reality) in VR (virtual reality). You can switch between VR and AR modes with a button.
The Apple Vision Pro looks like ski goggles: ultra-large curvature laminated glass + aluminum alloy body, and a lot of fabric is used in the mask and threaded headband.
-
Using a braided cable to connect to an external battery for power supply, a single battery lasts for 2 hours, and uses the "extremely advanced" battery replacement mode to achieve full-day battery life (Jobs' coffin board will be overwhelmed).
-
Myopic users can use magnetic myopia lenses in cooperation with Zeiss (cannot be used with ordinary glasses).
-
The control method is eye tracking + gestures (no need to raise your hand to the front) + voice, no handle is required.
Incredible hardware configuration:
-
Two 4K Micro OLED screens, the refresh rate is unknown, but the total screen pixels are as high as 23 million and support HDR. For reference, a common 4K screen is 3840x2160, which is about 8.3 million pixels. The Pro Display XDR monitor starts at 39,999 yuan, 32 inches, 6016×3384, 20.4 million pixels.
-
Apple M2 chip + R1 chip ("One frame uses two chips"): The performance of M2 goes without saying, and the newly emerged Apple R1 chip is mainly used to process camera and sensor data, claiming to be able to process camera and sensor data in 12 milliseconds. The image is transferred to the internal screen faster than the blink of an eye.
-
There is a 3D curved OLED screen on the outside, and the user's face can be scanned on the inside. This system, called EyeSight, can capture users' facial expressions in real time. When someone approaches, it can automatically display the user's face on the screen, pretending that the headset is "transparent" ("one side technology, one side art", according to Berry Yongpin Concept video turned into reality by Apple).
-
12 cameras, 5 sensors, 6 microphones, including: eye tracking and hand tracking cameras, cameras on the front, side and below, front lidar, infrared camera and LED indicator inside.
-
"Apple's first 3D camera" can record 3D video + spatial audio (video and audio with depth information).
-
Use Optic ID iris recognition for biometric verification (should you be able to pay with WeChat/Alipay/Apple Pay? )
visionOS system
, Apple designed specifically for spatial computing: compatible with iOS and iPadOS applications, and also has its own app store.
Microsoft's Word, Excel, and Teams already support Vision Pro (as we all know, Microsoft is Apple's best developer).
Apple Vision Pro
can scan and model the real world, and then display the real world in the VR world. Applications/windows can float in the air like real objects, and the windows can be moved and stretched freely.
Although the experience and usage are close to Microsoft HoloLens. But it’s like using VR technology to recreate HoloLens’ AR augmented reality.
Among the three major positioning of similar tools, "productivity tools (infinite screen), information terminals, and entertainment tools,"
Apple focused on conventional VR/AR applications such as VR cinema, video conferencing, and using the Mac as a VR wireless expansion screen
. It focuses on content consumption, which is obviously different from the direction of Microsoft HoloLens, which focuses on industrial applications (medicine, engineering machinery, etc.) (What is there that mobile computers and other VR/AR cannot do?)
Apple Vision Pro is priced at US$3,499, approximately RMB 24,860
. It will be available in the United States in early 2024 and will be available in other regions later next year.

Only Apple Can Do
theverge real shot
Unknown core specifications and experience:
weight, screen field of view and refresh rate (affects immersion and dizziness), accuracy of eye control and gesture control (whether operation is smooth or not).
Whether it can achieve the level of Apple's promotional videos will not be known until mass production early next year. Although there is always a power cord in the promotional videos, it is indeed real and dramatic.
Apple Vision Pro's unprecedented dual 4K Micro OLED screens and unprecedented performance (M2+R1) are simply Apple's modern technology remake of Microsoft HoloLens (released in 2015).
Apple Vision Pro has more than 5,000 patents for a single product. In front of it, all products of other companies, including Microsoft HoloLens 2, can only be called semi-finished products. From its screen, performance to application ecosystem, it is far ahead of its competitors and cannot be copied even if you want. Apple's self-developed chips, iOS/iPad OS application ecosystem, and Apple device linkage are all killer features.
The price of US$3,499, which is about 24,860 yuan, seems outrageous, but compare it to the retail version
of Microsoft HoloLens 2, which will be sold in 2020 and uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 with a second-generation holographic processing unit (4GB memory + 64GB UFS 2.1).
Also bought it for $3,500. Do you suddenly feel that Apple is a great philanthropist?
In addition to technology, price is also the key to determining whether Apple Vision Pro can change the world. Only when the cost is reduced can it become popular. The non-Pro version of Apple Vision to be released in the future will have to be at least reduced to a level of 10,000 yuan similar to the iPhone Pro series to have any hope of becoming "popular".
03
Sword Art Online, Ready Player One, and Berry Victory
In the economic downturn, foreign and domestic VR/AR manufacturers (Microsoft, Facebook Oculus, HTC Vive, Nreal, Pico, Luo Yonghao, etc.) regard Apple Vision Pro as "aunt" - and are afraid that it will not Come, but I'm afraid it will mess up.
The ones who are really happy are definitely VR/AR content manufacturers. "Sword Art Online" and "Ready Player One" are about to become a reality.
VR/AR has been announced as a transition too many times, and the capital market’s hype about “the first year of VR” has made my ears tingle. Which year is the “first year of VR”? I hope this is the last "VR Year".
