Analog engineers all know that when building a circuit using MOSFET, it is often necessary to use a fast recovery diode (FRD), because the reverse recovery time of the diode is almost zero, and the switch can be turned off in an instant, which can prevent the turn-off reaction. If the speed is too slow, the upper and lower tubes are turned on at the same time, resulting in chip burnout.


In response to the increasingly widespread application requirements for high voltage, high efficiency, low power consumption, and fast reverse recovery required by electronic design, Toshiba has launched a fast recovery diode CMF02A using silicon diffused junction technology , which complies with AEC-Q101 automotive grade certification standards. , using surface mount packaging, which can meet installation requirements in small spaces and achieve higher power density.

Basic characteristics of the device


CMF02A is an FRD diode for high-speed switching purposes. Compared with typical diodes, FRD has a shorter reverse recovery time (t rr ) and therefore has faster switching time and lower losses. Of course, the basic function of CMF02A is still to be used as a rectifier diode, that is, the current can flow from the anode to the cathode (forward direction), but cannot flow from the cathode to the anode (reverse direction). Rectifier diodes have a forward current of 0.5A or more and are designed to convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). Its main features are as follows:


(1) Repetitive peak reverse voltage: VRRM = 600V
(2) Average forward current: I F (AV) = 1.0A
(3) Peak forward voltage: V FM =2.0V (maximum value) @I FM =1.0A (pulse measurement)
(4) Reverse recovery time: t rr =100ns (maximum value) @I F =1.0A, di/dt =-30A/µs

In what applications can FRD be used? Conventional rectifier diodes are often used in applications with operating frequencies below 500Hz, while FRDs have a fast recovery speed and can be used in switching applications from a few kHz to 100kHz, such as switching power supplies, inverters, DC-DC converters, etc.

As we all know, every power device needs a specific time to turn off its state. The so-called reverse recovery time trr is the time it takes for the diode to switch from on to off after the applied voltage changes from forward to reverse, and FRD aims to shorten this time.

What is the trr level of FRD? Usually the t rr of the rectifier diode is from a few microseconds to tens of microseconds, while the t rr of the FRD is from tens of nanoseconds to hundreds of nanoseconds, which is about 1/100 of the speed of ordinary rectifiers. The smaller t rr is, the smaller the switching loss is.

CMF02A has all the characteristics of FRD. It is a diode with good switching characteristics and short reverse recovery time. And the device has passed AEC-Q101 automotive grade certification , making it not only suitable for electronic circuits such as switching power supplies, pulse width modulators (PWM), and frequency converters, but also for switching regulators and DC-DC conversion in automobiles. device, motor driver, etc.
