The Z-Wave Alliance is committed to promoting the Z-Wave wireless protocol that is currently popular in the smart home market. It recently announced the details of the Z-Wave Plus v2 certification, which is designed for a new generation of devices based on the Z-Wave 700 platform. The updated certification specifications will significantly improve the consumer experience by mandating the inclusion of SmartStart testing and verification. The SmartStart function enables plug-and-play installation of smart home devices, making it more convenient for users to use.
A Z-Wave hub with SmartStart can quickly identify any SmartStart-enabled accessory device, such as a smart door lock or smart light bulb, by scanning a QR code through the app, eliminating the complexity of installation. With SmartStart, the device information is already set up in the hub, and pairing is completed before consumers add products - all settings are done in the background, greatly shortening and simplifying the consumer's product setup process.
As more devices using the Z-Wave 700 platform are released, SmartStart will become a pervasive feature of all Z-Wave smart homes. Additional updates to the certification of Z-Wave 700 devices include the requirement for device identification via an LED light on each product to provide user confirmation that the correct device is being set up in the hub’s app.
Backed by Silicon Labs and the Z-Wave Alliance and its third-party testing organizations, the new certification specification will keep Z-Wave at the forefront of smart home interoperability. Building new hub/gateway devices on the Z-Wave 700 platform will need to support all device categories, including sensors.
The Z-Wave Plus v2 certification also places another focus on network security, namely the Z-Wave S2 security specification, which will be mandatory for all newly certified devices to improve the security protection capabilities of terminal devices.
As of mid-2019, the Z-Wave Alliance has certified over 3,000 products, and there are now nearly 500 devices on the market with the S2 security framework built in.
Since the concept of Z-Wave was born more than a decade ago, the Z-Wave product ecosystem has always focused on user ease of use and installation. With each platform update, Z-Wave hopes to improve the interoperability and user experience of the Z-Wave network. With the new generation of devices built on the Z-Wave 700 platform and certified by Z-Wave Plus v2, smart homes will be easier to install and access than ever before.
