Silicon Labs Expands IoT Wireless Portfolio with Standards-Based Wi-SUN Technology
Certified and fully integrated Wi-SUN solution simplifies LPWAN deployment for smart cities
Silicon Labs (also known as "Silicon Labs") announced the launch of new standards-based Wi-SUN® technology, opening up new Internet of Things ( IoT ) market opportunities and accelerating the development of smart city applications. The certified Silicon Labs Wi-SUN solution combines the industry-leading EFR32 hardware platform, a full-featured IPv6 mesh networking protocol stack and advanced development tools to enable secure wireless connectivity for a wide range of applications - from advanced metering infrastructure ( AMI ) to street lighting networks, asset management and smart city sensors such as parking, air quality and waste management.
“As a leader in wireless connectivity for the IoT, Wi-SUN is a perfect addition to our portfolio,” said Matt Johnson , senior vice president and general manager of IoT products at Silicon Labs . “ Wi-SUN is a comprehensive solution optimized for large-scale, long-range, low-power wide-area networks ( LPWANs ). Our Wi-SUN technology provides a non-proprietary approach for industrial and smart city applications, making deployments more scalable, flexible and secure.”
Wi-SUN technology is certified by the Wi-SUN Alliance, a global industry association dedicated to enabling seamless LPWAN connectivity. Built on standard Internet Protocol ( IP ) and application programming interfaces ( APIs ), Wi-SUN enables developers to extend existing infrastructure platforms to add new or mature applications that serve a variety of industrial and smart city workflows. With long-range capabilities, high data throughput, and support for IPv6 , Wi-SUN can be expanded to simplify wireless infrastructure for cities and expanding suburbs.
“The Wi-SUN Alliance’s mission is to enable ubiquitous, intelligent networks for service providers, utilities, municipalities, and other smart city companies,” said Phil Beecher , president and CEO of the Wi-SUN Alliance. “We are excited to see Silicon Labs and other Alliance member companies introduce innovative solutions based on the Wi-SUN FAN specification, which fully defines how to build secure, reliable, and resilient networks for large-scale smart city outdoor applications.”
Silicon Labs' first Wi-SUN -enabled wireless system-on-chip ( SoC ) product family is the EFR32xG12 , a 32- bit Arm Cortex-M4 platform with up to 1 MB of flash and 256 kB of RAM , and an integrated 20dBm power amplifier ( PA ) operating in the sub -1GHz band. Silicon Labs is currently certified for Wi-SUN FSK PHY and is working with leading customers to bring fully certified Wi-SUN applications to the market. Silicon Labs' complete Wi-SUN solution is expected to be generally available in early summer 2021 .
Silicon Labs will demonstrate the benefits of Wi-SUN for smart city applications with Landis+Gyr and Pelion at the Smart Cities Connect online conference on April 14 , 2021. For more information on Silicon Labs’ Wi-SUN technology, visit www.silabs.com/wireless/wi-sun .
