ROHM develops compact, high-precision pressure sensor IC "BM1390GLV" with IPX8 waterproof rating

ROHM, a world-renowned semiconductor manufacturer (headquartered in Kyoto, Japan), has developed a small, high-precision air pressure sensor IC " BM1390GLV(-Z) " with a waterproof rating of IPX8 *1 for white goods, industrial equipment, and small IoT devices.



In applications such as smartphones and wearable devices, air pressure sensors have been widely used to obtain altitude difference data for indoor navigation and activity trackers. In recent years, as their application range has expanded, there has been an increasing demand for air pressure sensors with excellent waterproof performance, smaller size, and greater resistance to external changes. Against this backdrop, ROHM has newly developed a small air pressure sensor that has IPX8-level waterproof performance and is highly resistant to temperature changes and stress.

The new product combines MEMS *2 and control circuit technologies accumulated over many years with ROHM's own waterproof technology, achieving IPX8 waterproof performance despite a package size of only 2.0mm×2.0mm×1.0mm. In addition, ROHM's own temperature calibration function is used to achieve excellent temperature characteristics. Not only that, by adopting a ceramic package, characteristic fluctuations caused by stress when mounted on the circuit board are suppressed. These features make it possible to achieve high-precision air pressure detection even in applications where previous products had difficulty meeting waterproof performance requirements and in environments with large temperature changes.


The new product will be put into mass production in August 2021 (sample price 700 yen/piece, excluding tax). The production base for the early process is the ROHM headquarters factory (Kyoto, Japan), and the production base for the later process is ROHM Electronics Philippines, Inc. (Philippines). In addition, the new product and the evaluation board "BM1390GLV-EVK-001" have been sold online through e-commerce platforms Ameya360, Sekorm, Right IC and Oneyac since June 2021.

In the future, ROHM will continue to develop high-precision and high-reliability sensor products.

New Product Features


Small package and waterproof performance up to IPX8, suitable for a wider range of applications

The BM1390GLV combines ROHM's MEMS, control circuit technology and proprietary waterproofing technology, achieving IPX8 waterproofing in the same small package (2.0mm×2.0mm×1.0mm) as previous products. The new product adopts an advanced structure that protects the IC's interior with a special gel, allowing it to be installed in applications such as white goods and industrial equipment that require waterproofing.


Excellent temperature characteristics and stress resistance for high-precision air pressure detection

BM1390GLV has its own built-in temperature calibration function and uses ceramic as the packaging material, achieving excellent temperature characteristics and stress resistance. It can perform high-precision pressure detection even in environments that are greatly affected by temperature changes and stress.


・Built-in temperature calibration function achieves stable detection accuracy from low to high temperatures

The BM1390GLV has a built-in temperature calibration function that uses ROHM's own algorithm . Compared with ordinary products, the air pressure detection error caused by temperature is smaller, and since stable air pressure detection is achieved, it can be installed near heat sources that are difficult to install with ordinary products. In addition, correction calculations by an external MCU (microcontroller) are no longer required, which helps reduce design man-hours.

・Ceramic package is adopted to suppress characteristic fluctuation caused by stress

The resin package used in previous products has caused product characteristics to fluctuate due to stress during board mounting . The BM1390GLV uses a ceramic package to suppress characteristic fluctuations caused by stress. This helps increase flexibility in board layout design by eliminating the pressure sensor layout restrictions that resin package products are subject to.
