The new Snapdragon 888 mobile platform empowers the next generation of flagship devices
On December 1, the first day of the 2020 Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit , Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon and global industry leaders shared online the important role played by the Qualcomm Snapdragon™ 8 Series Mobile Platform in leading the next generation of terminal experience. Qualcomm's continuous innovation in flagship mobile platforms, combined with the evolution of 5G technology, is accelerating and continuing to redefine immersive user experience. The experience created by the flagship Snapdragon mobile platform has and will continue to provide a richer life for billions of smartphone users around the world.
Qualcomm President Amon said:
The foundation of creating premium experiences is a relentless focus on innovation, even in the face of uncertainty. Creating premium experiences also requires an eye on the future, so that we can continue to create technologies that redefine premium experiences.
Opening a new era of mobile experience
The basic technology created by Qualcomm was first applied to smartphones, and then expanded to different levels of Snapdragon platforms and many fast-growing important segments that are being transformed by mobile technology, including always-on, always-connected PCs, XR devices, edge/cloud AI products, 5G fixed wireless broadband, etc. The technologies that meet the complex needs of these rich applications are all derived from the breakthrough innovations of the flagship Snapdragon mobile platform.
At the summit, Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager of mobile, computing and infrastructure business of Qualcomm, announced the launch of the latest generation of flagship platform,
Qualcomm Snapdragon™ 888 5G Mobile Platform
, which will provide users with the highly anticipated top mobile experience.
Lekha Motiwala, director of product management at Qualcomm, further shared the key features of the new flagship mobile platform.
-
Snapdragon 888 integrates Qualcomm's third-generation 5G modem and RF system - Snapdragon X60 , supports all major global millimeter wave and Sub-6GHz frequency bands, as well as 5G carrier aggregation, global multi-SIM card functions, independent (SA) and non-independent (NSA) networking modes and dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS). It is a truly global compatible 5G platform.
-
The new 6th generation Qualcomm AI Engine , including the newly designed Qualcomm Hexagon™ processor , has achieved a leap in AI performance and energy efficiency compared to the previous generation platform, reaching an amazing 26 trillion operations per second (26 TOPS). The second generation Qualcomm Sensor Hub further improves the performance level of the platform, integrating an always-on low-power AI processor to support intuitive interactions and intelligent features.
-
Since its launch, Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming™ has brought dozens of innovative technologies first realized in the mobile industry to smartphones, including GPU driver updates, PC-level forward rendering, and ultra-smooth gaming at up to 144 frames. Snapdragon 888 integrates the third-generation Snapdragon Elite Gaming , bringing the most significant performance improvement ever to the Qualcomm Adreno™ GPU .
-
Snapdragon 888 doubles down on computational photography, turning smartphones into professional-quality cameras. Qualcomm Spectra™ ISP supports faster billion-pixel processing, allowing users to take photos and videos at a speed of 2.7 billion pixels per second, that is, 120 frames per second are captured and each frame is 12 million pixels, which is up to 35% faster than the previous generation platform.
During the keynote speech, Qualcomm also demonstrated the powerful performance of Snapdragon 888 through a wireless remote control racing car based entirely on 5G millimeter wave connection. Qualcomm worked with Verizon and Ericsson to build a 5G private network. Both remote control racing cars were connected to and controlled by the Snapdragon 888 reference design mobile phone with integrated Snapdragon X60 5G modem and RF system. The driver controlled the car about 1.6 kilometers away from the track and used the excellent imaging function supported by Snapdragon 888 to remotely watch the live track situation.
In addition, with the support of Tension, the entire process can be viewed through multiple low-latency video streams, and the latest positioning capabilities of the Qualcomm® Location Suite can be used to more accurately track the position of the remote control car on a dynamic map. This demonstration shows the possibility of high-performance, high-reliability and low-latency communication technology to support a wide range of use cases.
