Qorvo and ubisys, a leading smart home and IoT company, have developed a new, highly compatible gateway solution that enables free communication between various devices by integrating ZigBee® 3.0 and Green Power-based smart home networks into the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) IoTivity framework.

The IoTivity open source framework provides technical specifications for seamless connectivity between various physical media layer, transport layer and application layer devices. As the number of IoT devices (currently in the billions) continues to grow, the above framework becomes more and more important. The global ZigBee home automation market alone is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 26% between 2016 and 2020. With other markets such as industrial and environmental IoT, the development of common specifications is urgent.

The Qorvo IoTivity plug-in is the industry's first single-channel, multi-stack radio chip. Wireless products such as the Qorvo GP712 chip can handle multiple IoT network layers simultaneously, including Thread, ZigBee 3.0 with Green Power, and RF4CE networks. The highly integrated GP712 simplifies the design of IoT gateways, routers, and set-top boxes. By reducing components and antennas, the coexistence challenges of multiple IoT networks are naturally alleviated.

“OCF is doing groundbreaking work and we are joining them to contribute our expertise in IoT and bring ZigBee 3.0 interoperability to this high-end framework,” said Dr. Arasch Honarbacht, founder and managing director of ubisys. “IoTivity is a great fit to bring together products under a single IP. The IoTivity plug-in we developed together with Qorvo is an adapter for ubisys’ Smart Facility Services. It combines the unique benefits of ZigBee 3.0, including ZigBee Green Power, and the OCF IoTivity reference design.”

"Existing connected devices generate a vast amount of data. Integrating this data opens up new possibilities for intelligent applications," said Cees Links, general manager of Qorvo's Wireless Connectivity business unit. "With IoTivity, our wireless solutions break through the technology barriers to connect billions of IoT devices. The truly smart home is just around the corner."
