Fei-Fei Li, who left Google Cloud, has new developments.
Recently, Fei-Fei Li announced the establishment of the Human-centered AI Institute (HAI) at Stanford University. She will serve as co-director with John Etchemendy, former provost of Stanford University, to promote AI research, education, policy and practice for the benefit of humanity.
Fei-Fei Li said in her WeChat Moments that the institute will focus on three areas of work:
1) Promote and develop the next generation of AI science (focusing on the intersection with brain science and cognitive science)
2) Research and predict the impact of AI on human society and life
3) Design and implement human-centered AI technologies and applications
Fei-Fei Li also co-authored a blog post with John Etchemendy, detailing the considerations behind the birth of HAI.
AI needs to be humanistic
In this blog post titled "A common goal of Stanford University and smart people around the world: putting people at the center of artificial intelligence," Fei-Fei Li and John said that the rapid development of AI technology brings both risks and rewards.
But unlike other double-edged technologies, such as nuclear and biotechnology, AI research is low-barrier and global. While it is impossible to control such a decentralized technology, there are things you can do to guide it responsibly.
Therefore, Fei-Fei Li and others believe that AI needs to be humanistic , which is also the original intention of Stanford to create HAI.
Li Feifei said that HAI will be committed to supporting the breadth of interdisciplinary research and promoting dialogue between academia, industry, government and the public, that is, a human-centered artificial intelligence .
Based on this idea, Stanford University will build the institute around five goals:
-
Catalytic technology breakthroughs and multidisciplinary research
-
Cultivating a strong global ecosystem
-
Educate and train AI leaders in academia, industry, government, and the public
-
Driving real-world action and policy
-
Promoting a global, human-centered conversation on AI
specific project
As can be seen on the project's official website, HAI has already launched several specific projects, including:
-
The human adversarial case
-
Free exploration of human-centered AI systems
-
Correcting gender and racial bias in AI algorithms
-
The impact of AI on human nature
-
Autism treatment on Google Glass
-
Learning tactile feedback for movement guidance
The HAI plan reminds people that in May last year, Fei-Fei Li also took the lead in establishing a non-profit organization AI4ALL to attract students from diverse backgrounds to participate in AI research projects, especially young women, in order to reduce bias in the AI world.
