Dr. Sun Jian, chief scientist of Megvii and director of Megvii Research Institute, unfortunately passed away due to illness early this morning.

Dr. Sun Jian was born in October 1976 and is 45 years old this year. He was a chief researcher at Microsoft Research Asia and has won the CVPR Best Paper Award twice.

His most well-known achievement is the residual network ResNet, which he led He Kaiming and others to create. After ResNet was proposed in 2015, it won the ImageNet championship and won the CVPR 2016 Best Paper Award.

Sun Jian's doctoral major is pattern recognition and intelligent control. As a graduate student jointly trained by Microsoft Research Asia and Xi'an Jiaotong University, he studied under Dr. Harry Shum.

Dr. Harry Shum is a top expert in computer vision and graphics, and co-founder of Microsoft Research China (now Microsoft Research Asia).

In 2001, Sun Jian and Shen Xiangyang completed a project on stereo reconstruction using belief propagation. He also became the first scholar in the industry to use Bayesian belief propagation to solve stereo vision problems.

In 2003, Dr. Sun Jian graduated from the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics of Xi'an Jiaotong University.
