NI (National Instruments), a software-centric platform provider dedicated to helping users accelerate the development and improve their performance, today announced the launch of the mmWave Vector Signal Transceiver (VST) to address the test challenges posed by 5G mmWave RFIC transceivers and power amplifiers.

NI mmWave Solutions

As chipmakers race to commercialize 5G mmWave technology, engineers are challenged to accelerate product schedules while addressing new technology requirements that have yet to be addressed. NI’s mmWave test solution addresses these challenges in both R&D labs and high-volume production environments. The solution provides:

• Measurement quality to meet the strict technical requirements of laboratories

• An architecture designed to meet the specific needs of mmWave chip production testing

• Unified software experience simplifies measurement and automation

NI’s solution uses the mmWave VST , which combines an RF signal generator, RF signal analyzer, and integrated switches with 1GHz instantaneous bandwidth at frequencies up to 44GHz . In addition to existing PXI-based characterization systems in the lab, the instrument itself can be integrated into the NI Semiconductor Test System (STS) for deployment in high-volume manufacturing applications. Selecting a tester based on the modular PXI platform helps engineers using STS quickly integrate new measurement capabilities (such as 5G) into test cells, thereby improving cost-effectiveness and reducing the risk of delayed time to market.

“In the race to bring 5G technology to market, traditional approaches to RF semiconductor test are struggling to achieve the flexibility and cost expectations of 5G devices,” said Eric Starkloff, president and COO of NI. “The mmWave VST is another example of how NI can combine our industry-leading platform with customer insights to enable disruptive innovation for our customers.”

NI's multiple innovations make it more accurate and efficient

The product features several innovations to meet the test requirements of 5G mmWave devices. The new calibrated integrated switch supports up to 32 channels , improving the accuracy of beamforming and phased array measurements without the need for additional infrastructure . The modular front-end design enables accurate and cost-effective measurements while maintaining forward compatibility with future 5G bands. With these innovations, engineers can make measurements at 5-21GHz and 26-44GHz simultaneously .

NI’s release of the mmWave VST is a reflection of NI’s continued commitment to helping customers reduce costs and shorten time to market for RFIC devices. The mmWave VST complements NI’s modular instrumentation portfolio, which includes more than 600 PXI products from DC to mmWave, as well as NI measurement software for 2G, 3G, LTE Advanced Pro, Wi-Fi 802.11ax, Bluetooth 5 , and more, supporting multiple languages including LabVIEW and C#.NET .
