Supporting Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Smart, Microchip RN4677 module lands on Mouser
Mouser Electronics is now stocking the RN4677 dual-mode Bluetooth® module from Microchip Technology. This fully certified, embedded 2.4GHz module allows designers to easily add Bluetooth Classic (BR/EDR) and Bluetooth Smart (low energy) functionality to control and sensor applications. The RN4677 connects products to smartphones and tablets, providing local connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT) for data transfer, control, and access to cloud applications.
The Microchip RN4677 dual-mode Bluetooth module, available from Mouser, offers a complete wireless solution with an onboard Bluetooth protocol stack, integrated antenna, and world radio certification in a compact 22mm × 12mm × 2.4 mm surface mount package. The module features 7 general-purpose input/outputs (GPIOs), transparent UART mode (seamless serial data transfer over Bluetooth BR/EDR with the Serial Port Profile (SPP), and Bluetooth Smart functionality using the Generic Attributes (GATT) profile. In addition, it features up to 2 dBm transmit power and down to ‑92dBm receive sensitivity (Bluetooth Smart), as well as a single operating input voltage range of 3.3V to 4.3V. The RN4677 module uses an ASCII command-based control interface, allowing designers to configure the RN4677 without the need for complex configuration tools.
The Microchip RN4677 PICtail/PICtail Plus daughter board supporting the RN4677 module is also available from Mouser. This demonstration board allows designers to evaluate the RN4677 and develop Bluetooth low energy applications. The board uses its built-in USB-to-serial functionality to communicate with the onboard RN4677. Once plugged into a PC, the board enumerates as a Communication Device Class (CDC) family device. Through a terminal program, designers can configure and control the module and transfer data with the provided easy-to-use command set. Designers can also plug the board into an Explorer16 board, XLP 16-bit Development Board, or PIC32 Starter Kit I/O Expansion Board to develop firmware on a host microcontroller of their choice that connects directly to the RN4677 via UART using a PICtail or PICtail Plus interface.
The Microchip RN4677 dual-mode Bluetooth module targets the low-power wireless application market, such as sports and fitness tracking, LED lighting, fitness and medical devices, Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, and home automation.
