Recently, the " China Electric Vehicle Hundred People Forum (2020) " was held at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing. After ten years of planning and cultivation, China's new energy vehicle industry has certain first-mover advantages and scale advantages, but as the industry generally believes, the automotive industry is facing challenges. Focusing on key technologies, building innovation platforms, constructing industrial ecology, and achieving cross-border integration have become industry consensus.

How to enable the full life cycle management of automotive batteries will become one of the industry topics, which will play a key role in the cultivation of the new energy vehicle market and the construction of battery safety systems! At the meeting, Herman Eiliya, general manager of the Battery Management System Division of ADI, also put forward a similar point of view in his speech. In recent years, key technologies from ADI have realized the "core" value empowerment of the full life cycle management of automotive batteries.

Core semiconductor technology
Helping the electric vehicle industry grow

Compared with high-end fuel vehicles, electric vehicles are more economical and environmentally friendly. Eiliya gave an impressive interpretation with a set of data comparison: Audi A8 consumes 18.8L of oil for 100 kilometers, while Tesla Model S consumes 22 kWh of electricity for the same distance, which is only equivalent to 2.9L of oil! As one of the world's earliest semiconductor companies to develop on-board battery monitoring chips, ADI's reliable, safe and innovative new energy vehicle electrification solutions have been used by many car companies around the world in hybrid and pure electric vehicles. In addition, ADI's electrification solutions are also widely used in industry, communications, energy and IoT fields. "In 2019 alone, ADI helped reduce nearly 75 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions through R&D deployment in various fields of electrification, which is equivalent to planting 1 billion trees. " Eiliya used a set of shocking data to reveal ADI's great contribution to improving the human environment in promoting electrification .

According to data provided by UBS , 1.8 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide in 2018, of which China has a very large market share and is expected to continue to grow rapidly in the next few years. In order to provide continuous development momentum for the electric vehicle market with a continuously increasing number of vehicles and effectively evaluate the residual value of electric vehicles, and promote the process of automotive electrification, the demand for monitoring, management and evaluation of the entire life cycle of batteries will also increase. ADI is at the forefront of the industry in many fields such as energy storage systems, battery manufacturing, and battery management.

In fact, the battery management system covers the entire life cycle of electric vehicle batteries, from battery formation to storage and transportation, to automobile manufacturing and battery driving monitoring, and then to the maintenance and recycling of in-vehicle batteries. The battery management system can definitely make a difference in improving the residual value of used cars. To this end, ADI has launched a proven wireless battery management system and platform that can achieve more accurate, full-life cycle battery monitoring, and can collect and store data information throughout the entire process of battery production, storage, and transportation , so that industry chain partners can extend the life cycle of batteries and the entire electric vehicle through these data, ensure that the used electric vehicle market is more attractive, and make consumers willing to buy electric vehicles.

"High Precision + Wireless" Battery Monitoring
The key to the whole life cycle of power batteries

In addition to collecting and storing data on the entire battery life cycle, ADI's battery management system can also provide more accurate data for monitoring. "If we discharge to 25% of the minimum safe power and charge to 85% of the maximum safe power based on a 5% measurement accuracy, the battery will only have 60% of usable power. If the measurement error is reduced from 5% to 1%, the usable power can be increased from 60% to 68%." Eiliya gave an example, "ADI uses more accurate BMS battery management devices to ensure a 1% error in the process of monitoring battery indicators, and develop algorithms to more accurately calculate battery life, which has a disruptive improvement in battery pack performance. "

ADI has many years of experience in basic battery management system semiconductor applications, from the initial single-board design to modular design, and then to the wireless battery management system that is now being adopted. In order to promote the development of the next generation of electric vehicles, the wireless battery management system can not only remove the connection harness of this module, reduce the weight and manufacturing cost of the vehicle, and expand the available space to accommodate more batteries, but more importantly, the wireless connection method can detect the battery status in real time and better evaluate the performance of the battery throughout its life cycle.

"The wireless battery management system provided by ADI serves as a platform to collect battery data and use this data to predict the performance of the battery during use through machine learning and artificial intelligence. At the same time, ADI also hopes that this data will promote the development of machine learning in order to provide more intelligent services and bring benefits to automakers and end users." Eiliya further explained.

Building an Ecosystem Together

It is worth mentioning that during the forum, ADI and the China Electric Vehicle 100 Forum signed a strategic cooperation memorandum and jointly initiated the establishment of the " Battery Full Life Cycle Joint Innovation Center ."

The newly established innovation center will focus on researching and solving a series of key issues in the field of new energy vehicle power batteries, such as battery safety, battery valuation and data sharing, and will attract more leading companies in the industry chain to join in forming a cross-industry, cross-disciplinary and cross-departmental industry research platform. Eiliya said: "As China's authoritative think tank in the field of automobiles and travel, ADI is very honored to cooperate deeply with the 100 People's Forum, give full play to our advanced technology in the field of battery management, and unite partners in the industry ecosystem to promote industry development."
