With the popularity of smart phones, the applications around mobile phones are gradually spreading. The concept of smart hardware is well reflected in the peripheral modules of mobile phones. From the initial selfie stick to the handheld drone, various applications have made the functions of mobile phones more and more abundant. As we all know, the world of the Internet of Things cannot do without temperature sensing, and temperature is also one of the important perceptions of the human body. As an important link, temperature monitoring is widely used in various industries such as medical/biological/manufacturing. As a global provider of microelectronic solutions, Melexis has made a breakthrough in the design of the monolithic MLX90615 digital infrared sensor chip and a full set of solutions, making miniaturized mobile temperature measurement possible.

Industry Trends - Semiconductors Approaching Healthcare and Life

According to the statistics of the National Health and Family Planning Commission's Statistical Information Center, the total number of visits to medical institutions nationwide reached 3.92 billion from January to June 2017 alone. This shows that medical health has long become an indispensable part of people's lives, and the cost of disease diagnosis and treatment has also increased year by year. The Chinese medical classic "Huangdi Neijing" also pointed out that "the sage does not treat the disease that has already occurred, but treats the disease that has not yet occurred." Early detection and early treatment are a very critical step in life.

With the popularity of smart phones, mobile medical applications are also increasing, from mobile phone registration to handheld diagnosis and treatment, APP software is very popular. However, more hardware-based applications are limited by the "stumbling block" of sensor integration and cannot be fully utilized. The reason is that most sensors are limited by the size of the package, which makes it impossible to achieve miniaturization and integrate them into mobile phones.

Overcoming the traditional bottleneck - solving the drawbacks of traditional solutions

Traditional temperature sensors such as RTD/thermocouple/digital temperature sensors have long used the principle of heat conduction. The sensor must be in contact with the object to be measured in order to achieve the temperature measurement function. In the process of contact, many problems such as contamination/deformation are inevitable. The FIR pyroelectric method, due to the nonlinearity of its mathematical relationship, is mostly used to monitor the switching quantity of human/organisms, such as corridor lights/induction sanitary ware, etc., and cannot be directly used for accurate temperature measurement.

Volume/accuracy/non-contact method is a gap that cannot be overcome by previous products. As a global provider of microelectronic solutions, Melexis has launched the disruptive product MLX90615 to meet the actual problems encountered in engineering. Based on the traditional infrared pyroelectric method, MLX90615 integrates analog-to-digital conversion/digital control and output, and incorporates complex calibration correction algorithms into it, so that the traditional analog charge output pyroelectric sensor has a non-contact temperature measurement function with digital reading. The calibrated sensor can achieve a resolution of 0.02 degrees Celsius within the measurement range of -20 to 115 degrees Celsius. MLX90615 also guarantees an accuracy of more than 0.1 degrees Celsius in the range of 30-40 degrees Celsius that the human body is concerned about, giving it precise medical temperature measurement capabilities.

Using the MLX90615 single-chip infrared temperature measurement chip can greatly simplify the design of the analog front-end circuit, without adding additional operational amplifiers and ADC analog-to-digital converters. With the low-noise amplifier, high-resolution 16-bit ADC and powerful DSP unit integrated in the MLX90615, the digital signal can be directly sent to the microcontroller and accessed through a two-wire serial SMBus compatible protocol (resolution of 0.02°C) or a 10-bit PWM (pulse width modulation) signal. The design of the entire monitoring unit has been greatly simplified, making integration possible.

Breaking through packaging limitations – mobile applications become possible

On May 19, 2017, the global launch ceremony of Redbird Health Cloud Phone, a subsidiary of Beijing Xinian Technology, was held in Beijing. As the first "health cloud phone" in China, the ecosystem of Redbird Health Cloud Phone includes software and hardware support from dozens of partners such as iKang Guobin, WeDoctor, Qualcomm, Shennian Technology, AMS, Youxiang International, Haola Technology, and Lifestone of the United States. The phone integrates multiple sensing solutions such as air pressure/UV ultraviolet light/blood oxygen and blood pressure/temperature and humidity/ECG/body temperature, and is a pioneering product in mobile medical care. The temperature sensor in this product uses the infrared temperature sensor chip of Melexis as the design core.

Prior to this, Melexis infrared temperature sensor series products have long been popularized in various products close to life, such as daily hair dryers (to prevent hair from overheating damage), forehead thermometers (children/adult body temperature detection), smart watches (exercise monitoring), microwave ovens (food heating temperature control), air conditioning fans (ambient temperature monitoring), etc. Melexis products can be seen in various products such as hair dryers (to prevent hair from overheating damage), forehead thermometers (children/adult body temperature detection), smart watches (exercise monitoring), microwave ovens (food heating temperature control), air conditioning fans (ambient temperature monitoring), etc. Melexis is widely praised by customers for its simple solutions, miniaturized design, excellent performance and friendly pricing.

With the continuous upgrading of smart hardware/smart devices, more and more sensors will accompany people's lives. The Melexis infrared temperature sensor introduced in this article is one of them. With its simple solution and excellent performance, it is hoped that it will bring benefits to people. We don't know what the future will be like yet, but we believe that the advancement of technology will make life better, and Melexis will work with customers together.
